How to Minimize our Sacks....

As we all know, the Raiders led the league with an embarassing 72 sacks given up last year.

Obviously, this is a major concern to Kiffin, Knapp, Cable and company as they prepare for the upcoming 2007 season.

We must find a way to drastically reduce the number of sacks we give up, if we are going to have any chance of being a respectable team.

We have changed schemes, got a few free agents, and changed several players positions. However, why not do something that can IMMEADIATLEY help fix our problem.

What I am about to say might piss some people off, but I thought of the idea the other day and I think it's atleast worth discussing.

Note: Please don't take this too seriously, I just think it could be interesting to discuss

So here it is, I have to say the two words that no Raider fan likes to hear 'Tuck-Rule'....

Thats right Tuck Rule...

The Tuck Rule is officially defined as...

Quote:
Specifically, the rule states: "When a Team A player is holding the ball to pass it forward, any intentional forward movement of his arm starts a forward pass, even if the player loses possession of the ball as he is attempting to tuck it back toward his body. Also, if the player has tucked the ball into his body and then loses possession, it is a fumble."

In other words: When the quarterback is holding the ball with the thought of passing, any forward throwing motion creates the intent to pass the ball. Therefore, even if the quarterback decides, mid-motion, not to pass and to "tuck" the ball as if he were a running back, it is still considered part of his throwing motion, and thus, an incomplete pass and not a fumble.
So picture this in your mind...

Daunte/Mcown/Walter gets the ball from center and drops back to pass...

All of our recievers are covered, the possibilty of throwing the ball away is not an option due to whatever circumstances....

Our QB sees a defender coming and it looks like hes going to have to take the sack...

But instead of taking the sack, our QB does a quick little pump fake and very slowly 'tucks' the ball back in...

While he was tucking the ball he is hit by the oncoming defender and he fumbles the ball away (intentionally)...

Wouldn't this be considered an incomplete pass???

If our QB knows he is going to get sacked, why not just pretend hes going to throw and do a slow 'tuck' until hes hit and then proceed to fumble the ball...

It should be ruled as an incomplete pass everytime...

LOL can you imagine what would happen if the Raiders (or any team for that matter) tried to do this? It would be hell for the officials...

And hey, it could help reduce our sacks...

Easier said then done when you are taught as a kid to take the sack or throw it out of bounds and it happens so fast the mind doesn't think through motions like
that also timing is critical so its practically impossible to due consistently
