Terminology

i know pass plays are based on numbers from a passing tree like I-right 789, but how do u know what the other receivers like a rb and a fb are doing? Also, how do u call different types of pass blocking?

it's hard to discribe over typing for me but I'll give you an example..

Pro Split Twins 32 counter trap

this is a running play

the "pro" is the formation that is being run

"split twins" is the alignment where the X and Z receiver will line up

"right" is where the Y mainly a TE or the slot receiver will line up

"3" is the TB whose getting the ball

"2" is where the hole assignment where ball will be carry

"trap" is the blocking scheme for the O-line

the terminology is way different from westcoast to any other schemes in the NFL

I hope this helps

sorry i meant rb's/fb's/te's on pass plays since only 3 numbers are mentioned in a pass play from my knowledge. if you say pro-left 223 flat, who is running the flat? and what kind of pass protections are there and how are they called? ive heard something like 70 pass prot. or something.

OK I didnt play in high school but I did go into a mini camp of it one time, basically you have diffrent letters for your recievers, Y Z X ect.. but each letter corresponds with a number as well depending on the play and the progression. SO if its a Z slant, then the Z wr is the 1st option, then it goes by progression.

As for your 223 flat, I would say that the RB or the TE is usually the one to run in the flat.

Terminology is hard to pick up but alot of times guys like Payton Manning are calling out things like Blue 90 at the line, meaning he is reading number 90 to either blitz or drop out and things like that to let his oline know, sometimes its just for show as well too. /shrug hard to say, but Greg Beikert would know since he picked up on some of what a team said and then made the half time adjustments for us.. lol

each team has their own different system. for exmaple, i played on a team that did it by passing tree - with three numbers, with each representing a route like listed above. in that system the RB routes were just added on - for example i-right 789 F Swing - the F player (in this case the TB) ran a swing route.

i also was in another system where the first number was the route series, like "3" was for the 3-step drop package, "5" and "6" were for the 5-step, and "7" and "8" were for 7-step drops. the next number was the routes for the WRs, and last was for the Y receiver (the TE), and RB routes were just added on. for example deuce right fox 302 was the 3-step drop series, the backs are always pass-blocking in this case, the line pass blocks away from the strong side, the WRs run mirrored slants, and the "f" back motions out and runs a fade (fox).

also was in another offense where it was always a 2-digit number, the first number was the type of play, the second number was either route combo or run hole, and the formation was usually a number. for example "2 - 42", a "2" formation (base 1-back, strong right), "42" play was a dive to the 2-hole. "8 - 56" was an "8" formation, TE trips right, with a 50 passing series (dont remember but i believe it was 5-step drop, slide blocking to the weakside, RB pass blocks in the C gap, and a "6" route combo which i dont remember anymore.
