Depends on how disciplined a defense is and how well a qb can sell them. I hate to use him as an example but Tom Brady has a pretty decent pump fake, he can get a saftey to move or a db to bite so to speak, sometimes a pump fake gets the qb a better read on what the dbs or lbs are doing as well. So are they useful? yes.. Gannon used em effectivly as well.

I dont play on a team but if you play with your friends imo the best way to sell a pumpfake is to step up into it and wait for your receiver to slow down or stop. most people pump right when a reciever cuts but if you wait for your man to slow down or stop the defender wont feel threatened b/c he feels he can jump in front being that the receiver is stopped. But thats just from my personal experience.
