what do you have to go through in college to become one? Any tips

I dont believe that any college course can make you into a good scout. Scout are ofter ex coaches and players who have been around and have seen a lot of talented players. An Nfl team is going to hire someone they believe has some talent in picking talent and nothing is better than experience.

I think NFL try you out, by having you watch loads and loads of game tape and evaluating players, and if you do good they'll look into hiring you.

If you aren't an ex-player or coach there's no chance.

I wouldn't say no chance, maybe no chance right away. If you've never been in the game, no team is going to believe in your scouting. You're going to need experience, patience and a little luck. Best case scenario, 5 years to get your feet wet, 10 years to possibly get hired.

Or having a relative in the front office won't hurt.

I'll chime in, you become a scout by knowing someone. 7 years ago I coached football at the school Alex Spanos' grandson played (Chargers owner), he was JV all the way and nothing special as an athlete but guess what, he was promoted to asst. director of college scouting last week. Start making friends, that's your only ticket if you aren't born into it.
