Nickel & Dime
Someone explain these to me....I think they're packages, but I can't officially say I really know what I'm talking about!

nickely is when a corner/defensive back replaces one of the linebackers from a normal 4-3 formation, and a dime is when two corners/defensive backs replace both the outside linebackers from a normal 4-3 formation

Nickel 4-2-5 (4 Defensive Lineman, 2 Linebackers, 5 Defensive Backs)
Dime 4-1-6 (4 Defensive Lineman, 1 Linebacker, 6 Defensive Backs)
Both are substution packages to deal with the opposing offense using multiple wide receiver packages. In order to cover the extra wide receivers with out having a big mismatch, the defense drops linebackers and replaces them with extra DB's. A defensive line still needs to get a good pass rush on the ball, because given time, most NFL qb's will be able to find an open man eventually.

exactly. Just a small note, there are several variations of both formations. Such as the nickel 3-3-5 and dime flat(madden is a great teaching tool)

Usually a team uses its two best coverage backers in the nickel. You want to generate some sort of pass rush from the front four, though.

Usually the best coverage LBs are on the field. I think we have Johnson and Morrison in nickel packages. Bigger/run stopping safeties can often play LB in the Nickel (Gibson did for a few plays, and I think Cooper did last year)
