Q: Any thoughts on the prospect of bringing back Charles Woodson?

Branch: I knew that was going to be the first question. He’s one of those guys, he’s a great player, great competitor. But I’m sure Reggie [McKenzie] and DA [Dennis Allen] have something brewed up. I don’t know what they’ve got brewed up. I’m focused on the guys we have now.

Q: Do you know everybody’s names?
Branch:I won’t lie to you all and say I do…it’s a learning process. We’re building right now. I know all the defense, but offensive guys, I really don’t know yet.

Q: How tough is it, for the second straight year, having to get used to new faces for you?

Branch: It’s just part of the curve. You got to take the punches and roll with them. It’s just part of the learning curve.

Q: But as a safety, you learn to play off your corners and things like that. How important is it to get that continuity and get the same group of people in here from year-to-year?

Branch: That’s the importance of these OTAs. We take this time right here to start building up that chemistry.

Q: Some of these new guys that have come in, have you had a chance to work with them much in the off-season?

Branch: No not really. The rookies just got here and the new guys, we’re starting to build right now. We just got on the field for the first time as a defense, so we’re starting to build today.

Q: What do you think of DJ Hayden?

Branch: DJ Hayden? From what I’ve seen on film, he’s a pretty good ball player. I’m excited to work with him and he has all the attributes to be a good corner, and I’m excited.

Q: You must know some about Sio Moore?

Branch: Oh yeah, Sio. That’s my dog. His film speaks for itself; he’s a baller.

Q: He said you were his host when he visited?

Branch: Yeah, I was his ‘unofficial’ host though. I was everybody’s ‘unofficial’ host at UConn.

Q: How odd is it to walk out here for the first time as an NFL guy and not see Huffy [Michael Huff] around?

Branch: That’s my best friend. We’ve had a lot of years together. we both have a great relationship and I’m going to miss him. But this is football, you got to go out with the guys you’ve got.

Q: You and McFadden, Allen cited a few, and Lamarr, a handful of guys who are back. Do you take it upon yourself to lead or you just always been a leader by the way that you play and conduct yourself?

Branch: I’ve always seen myself as a leader, but now it’s more prominent. I’m one of the older guys now. So that’s why I’m growing my beard out and I’m excited for the challenge. I think I fit the role well.

Q: What would [Charles] Woodson mean to this team? What do you think he’d bring to the table?

Branch: He’s a great ballplayer, like I said, but right now we’ve got to focus on the guys we’ve got.

Q: Today was the official day or first time both having rookies and veterans on the field. What were your first impressions of everything?

Branch: It’s the first day, guys are a little rusty but we made the quarterbacks throw a lot of checkdowns and that’s always a good sign for the first day.

Q: Did it feel a little more, perhaps in years past, like the first day of school because you are really trying to learn names today, not just what everyone can do and their skill set?

Branch: It’s crazy. When we ran into the huddle, and we huddled up for the first time and I’m looking around like, ‘Man, that’s a lot of new faces in here.’ So, it was definitely different but I’m excited though. We’ve got a good group of guys here, everybody is here to work. This is the best attendance that I’ve had since I’ve been here, as far as people showing up for OTAs, and I’m excited.

Q: With the fact that it’s a full house and everybody’s here, is there like a feeling of a probable excitement to what’s ahead, the unknown?

Branch: Every year is the unknown. I don’t care if you’re coming back with 22 returning starters, you never know what the next team is doing. Every year is unknown, every season is a new season, and this season just presents new challenges and we’re excited for them.

Q: How was it out there? Everyone out there, rookies, vets, everyone.

Pryor: I think just today it was just get all the [kinks] and all the dust off a little bit. Just get out there and get with our teammates and start talking and communicating with each other. For the most part, I thought we did all great. Some mess ups, I had a couple minor mistakes, but that’s definitely going to be the first day and what it’s going to be like.

Q: Do you feel like you’ve made strides since the end of last season?

Pryor: I believe so. Definitely within the commands in the huddle and stuff like that and just becoming more accurate and just trying to get better at that. Just trying to lead from the standpoint of leading and having more command. I believe I got better today, but also I threw a pick today. High ball, just inaccurate. It was a great read, but I just missed the ball. I have to get better at things like that. Tomorrow is another day to get better and don’t make mistakes.

Q: Would you say overall that you’re disappointed with your day today?

Pryor: Yeah, because you can always get better. As soon as you feel like you’re stuck and you’re standing and there’s nowhere else to go in terms of getting better or anything, you’re not going to make it. So I believe I can get better. And as a team, we can get better overall. I think that’s the strides we’re going to make for tomorrow and then so on and so forth. But for myself, definitely. I didn’t think I did too bad, too great.

Q: What’s your relationship with Matt [Flynn] like? You guys are competing for a job, yet you’re trying to help each other.

Pryor: That’s what it is. The best man wins. You have to help each other. Just like the rookie that just came in, Tyler Wilson, you have to help him. You have to help [Matt] McGloin out. That’s definitely professional courtesy and the best man wins in that regard. I believe the teammates and stuff will round over who the guy is and they’ll know. I just think you have to help each other. You have to have professional courtesy, especially in the NFL, in football. I just think you have to be there for each other and help each other get better and that’s what it’s all about.

Q: Do you think you guys come in on equal footing? Are you a step behind Matt right now? What’s your view of the quarterback competition as is right now?

Pryor: I’m just trying to get better every day and I know Matt’s the same thing. He has his strengths; I have my strengths. It’s just about us getting better together, him getting better and myself individually getting better. Overall, that’s going to make the team better. And competition is great. I just think come out tomorrow, be better tomorrow, and tomorrow same thing with Matt. I’m sure he’s going to want to be better and do better the things he did today. That’s how we get better as a team overall. That’s something I’m definitely looking forward to.

Q: Last time we talked, Terrelle, the Raiders had just acquired Matt Flynn, but it was before the draft. And then they go out and draft a quarterback. How do you wrap your mind around everything and not get distracted by them bringing in quarterbacks and just keeping your focus on what you need to do?

Pryor: I just look at it from the standpoint of just doing what I’ve got to do every day. You need quarterbacks in this league. Look at last year. We got down to me, the third guy. People get knocked out. It’s the NFL. You have to have three or four quarterbacks and they have to be good. They have to be able to command if somebody is down and that’s why helping each other, whoever asked that question, is huge because it’s all for the team. If one guy goes down and the next guy has to come up and it’s all, ‘did you help the guy get ready?’ You may come back and what’s the record? It’s a team thing. You have to be together and be all for each other. Forget the competition. That’s another part, but this is a team thing and a team goal that we all have to reach and just be together, stick together.

Q: We were just talking to Matt Flynn a second ago and he said essentially that he’s not competing with others, he’s competing with himself. Is that how you feel?

Pryor: He hit it right on the head with a hammer. That’s what it is. You don’t compete versus other people. You just compete versus yourself. Every day you want to critique yourself more than what your coaches’ critique. If you’re doing that…I’m my worst critic, I believe that. As long as that is the same thing every single day, I critique myself harder than what the coaches are critiquing me or if they miss something and I see it, I just have to let myself know that. But Matt’s absolutely right; you have to compete versus yourself also.

Q: Been strange at all, all these new faces? A whole new look for you guys.

Pryor: Even from last year, just going back, you see different guys all the time, in and out. Losing guys, acquiring guys, it’s almost like a thing – be a great teammate, but also you just have to worry about yourself. When you’re on the field, lead your guys. I think from that standpoint I don’t really get caught into that because that’s why Coach Allen, Reggie, is great at what they do. I just worry about the things that I can control.

Q: First impressions getting a first look at all the pieces you’re going to get to work with?

Flynn: It was good. It was a lot of fun to get out here on the field. We’ve been kind of running plays where its offense by themselves, but it was good to get out and see a defense kind of give you some looks and get a little competition. It was good. There was definitely some rust out there, I think from everybody, myself included. But it was good to get out there and just compete a little bit and have fun playing football.

Q: Does it feel good to hear Reggie McKenzie give you the vote of confidence and say that you’re going to be the guy to start OTAs as the starter?

Flynn: Well, somebody has to take the first snap. What we do from here on out is who plays the best. So somebody’s got to take the first one. There can only be one quarterback on the field. My job is to go out there and play the best that I can, compete with myself. Be better tomorrow than I was today.

Q: You’ve got two young guys behind you, real inexperienced guys. You’re trying to learn this new system and get comfortable; do you have any time at all to kind of help them out or are you too busy trying to get yourself set up?

Flynn: There’s a little bit of both going on. I am familiar with the West Coast offense, West Coast-style terminology a little bit. That’s how I was brought up in Green Bay and then last year in Seattle. So I am a little bit more familiar with the terminology so it’s a little bit less of a learning curve, so I have had time to sit down with the guys and kind of give them a little bit of what I’m learned in the past, learned from some great quarterbacks.

Q: Do you look to really assert yourself as a leader or is that something that happens naturally?

Flynn: I think it’s something that happens naturally, but it’s definitely something I’ll be looking to take a step up and try to be a leader on this team. But it’s definitely going to be something that gets sorted out as you start playing games and start getting into the dog days a little bit.

Q: A former teammate of yours is supposed to be coming in here tomorrow for a visit. As a guy who’s worked with Charles Woodson, what could he potentially bring to the team?

Flynn: I’ve spent four years with Charles and everybody knows he’s a great player, but he’s also a great man, a great teammate, a great leader. I don’t know what’s happening with that. I don’t really follow that, but I think the front office, Reggie and them, are going to make the right decision, what they think is going to be best for us going forward and what’s going to be best for us come the fall. So I do have experience with him, but we’ll see how it plays out.

Q: What’s your impressions of being out there on the field a few times with [Darren] McFadden and today the first time against a defense?

Flynn: It’s good. I’ve spent a lot of time with him in the film room and he’s very knowledgeable about the game. He’s very knowledgeable about his job as a running back in protection. It’s good. You can see him kind of flying around and it’s good to have that guy that’s had success, been in the league for awhile, he kind of has your back. He’s a special player and a special athlete.

Q: He’s always been a guy that’s caught a decent amount of passes, but maybe not quite as many as some people have thought because his hands are so good. Do you think this West Coast scheme could account for a lot of receptions out of the backfield for him?

Flynn: It could. We’ll see how the game plans, organizing it, we feel like we have a couple of good guys coming out of the backfield hands-wise. Hopefully, the plan is, everyone will get their hands on the ball and everyone will get their opportunities to make some plays.

Q: For those that haven’t seen you play, what do you bring to the table?

Flynn: I’m extremely competitive. Don’t like to lose; don’t accept it. I like to think that I’m a smart, accurate player. I make quick decisions and I try to get everybody around me to play better and try to get all the playmakers around me the ball.

Notes, quotes and observations from first OTA
Paul Gutierrez
May 20, 2013
ALAMEDA -- Some notes, quotes and observations from the Raiders' first OTA practice of 2013…

* No. 1 quarterback Matt Flynn looked composed and threw a spiral that was just as pretty as it was accurate, rookie fourth-rounder Tyler Wilson still chucked the hardest ball and Terrelle Pryor looked as though he was forcing things as he was very inconsistent with his throws. A lot of wayward balls and uneven passes. And if you had Pryor throwing the first interception of OTAs, on a wobbly throw over the middle picked by Brandian Ross, vie yourself an old school WWF-inspired Barry Horowitz pat on the back.

* Speaking of Ross, as expected, he has been converted to a safety from cornerback. "When you bring him in as a corner, you let him go out there and you see how they do," said coach Dennis Allen. "Their skill set, at the end of the day, dictates that. Guys like Brandian Ross, can go out there and play corner in this league and be able to hold up, but his skill set probably lends him a little bit more valuable as a safety."

* And Tony Bergstrom, the first draft pick of the Raiders' regime of general manager Reggie McKenzie and coach Dennis Allen, is now a left guard. Bergstrom, who played right guard last season, was working there with the first-team offense. "That was something when we drafted him, that was kind of our long term vision for what we saw in him that he would be a guard and he's been a nice fit there at the guard so we'll see how it plays out through the off-season," Allen said. "We plan on mixing and matching that a bit and just seeing who stands out."

* A look, then, at the Raiders' first-team offense on the first day of OTA practice: left tackle Jared Veldheer, left guard Bergstrom, center Stefen Wisniewski, right guard Mike Brisiel, right tackle Khlaif Barnes, tight end David Ausberry, receivers Rod Streater and Denarius Moore, quarterback Flynn, fullback Marcel Reece, running back Darren McFadden.

* And a look at the Raiders' first-team defense: left defensive end Jason Hunter, defensive tackles Vance Walker and Pat Sims, right defensive end Lamarr Houston, weakside linebacker Sio Moore, middle linebacker Nick Roach, strongside linebacker Kaluka Maiava, cornerbacks D.J. Hayden and Mike Jenkins, free safety Usama Young and strong safety Tyvon Branch.

* So yeah, Houston has flipped to the more predominant speed-rush side of the line. "And then when you look at, there's some different things we can do to try to create some pass rush," Allen said. "I also look at a guy like Andre Carter who missed half the season last year coming off the injury and so having him with us for the whole off-season and being able to go through OTAs and mini-camp, I would expect he would give us a little more in that area, too."

* Miles Burris and Josh Cribbs were both observers having undergone offseason knee surgeries, respectively, while rookie tight end Nick Kasa (hamstring) and veteran cornerback Tracy Porter (calf) id not finish practice due to injury.

* Two undrafted rookies -- quarterback Kyle Padron and running back Deonte Williams -- were not in attendance per NFL rules as their respective classes at Eastern Washington and Cal Poly had yet to graduate.

* Everyone else on the Raiders' 90-man offseason roster was in attendance, even kicker Sebastian Janikowski. It was interesting to note, though, the absence of owner Mark Davis and McKenzie. Might they already be courting Charles Woodson off campus, so to speak? Well, Davis was at the league meetings in Boston. But as far as Janikowski's showing up? "That is something we talked about," Allen said. "I called him really at the start of the off-season program and kind of laid out a plan for him. He won't be here for every single OTA, we have a plan for him to be here. The great thing about it is that he wanted to, it wasn't something he fought, it was something he was all on-board for saying Coach anything you want me to do, I will be there. So, that's the great thing about these guys is that they want to be a part of it, they want to be involved in it."

* The camp battle at punter is going to be a good one. Recent signee Chris Kluwe put on a clinic with his coffin corner kicks, pinning the returners. Marquette King, meanwhile, was working on an Australian rules-style kick that had the ball traveling high and end over end. The result was two straight drops by the returners

When the Broncos held their first voluntary practice Monday, Moore was with the first-team defense at free safety, the position he held all of last year. The Broncos did not draft a safety nor sign one in free agency, though the team has made an offer to veteran free agent Charles Woodson, who visited the Broncos last week. Woodson is considering other teams, including the Oakland Raiders.

Moore said he would be happy if Woodson were to pick the Broncos, even if that meant less immediate job security.

"I hope that we get him because I'm all about competition. I never run from it," Moore said. "Charles Woodson, I grew up watching. So, if they bring him in, I'm going to be excited. I'm going to learn everything that he does and I'm going to compete like as if he's been here since I've been here."

Just looking at prospects we have what positions do you see us targeting in 2014 free agency/draft

Young Guys on Roster
QB:
Wilson, Pryor, Flynn

Flynn is still unproven, hopefully one guy emerges so we don't have to invest more into the most important position in football

RB
Mcfadden, Murray, Stewart
In my personal opinion Mcfadden will shine this year. Murray will prove he is a player in the league. This is a make or break year for Mcfadden in my opinion so he could get hurt again. I hope he doesn't but a move may have to be made if he flops. I don't believe in draft RB in the first round in this current state of NFL

FB
Reece
he is still young should be around for the next 5 years

TE
Kasa, Rivera, Ausberry
Kasa is raw but full of potential, put up or shut up for Ausberry. Both guys could emerge as a starting TE this year. We shall see, Rivera I fill as a complimentary piece

WR
our unit is young, we have guys that can play, but we need someone to emerge as number 1 to give Defensive coordinators nightmares
Moore, Streater, Ford, Vernon, Criner, Butler

T
Valdheer, Watson
Watson and Valdheer should hold down the fort

C
Wiz- should be the man in the middle

G
Nix, Bergstorm, Mady
don't know if these guys are starters

Defense
DE
Bass, Crawford, Houston
Houston is the man at one spot, but can the others prove they can play let alone start? We need an elite edge rusher

DT
Walker, Sims, McGee, Christo-
Sims and Walker still are young as Dlineman can play well into their 30s. Not sure who steps up out of this bunch

LB
Burris, Moore, Roach
We signed some vets to help short term. Moore should hold down the weak side, Burnett is decent and should be a the man for a few years at strong side and as he ages won't be in the nickel dime sets. Lets see what Roach does as the leader of the middle on his own team. The way Roach contract was offered he should be around a few years

CB
Hayden, Adams, Chekwa
I look for Hayden to become the man from his rookie year. I expect Porter or Jenkins to earn the other spot. I don't see us investing in another corner high in draft

S
Ross, Branch
Branch is solid at SS, not all world but is a good NFL defense. I feel we need an elite pass rush to make our secondary look better. If we do sign Woodson he should help out the team for the next 2 years. Not sure what to think about Ross. Woodson could fill the spot for a few years allowing us to attack the DLINE

1. Pryor isn't nearly as consistent as the other QBs. He is looking like a 3rd stringer at this point.
2. Heard Ausberry has taken most of the starting TE reps. Is he the guy at TE?
3. We have a legit Punter competition.
4. DJ Hayden and Sio Moore look like the only Raider rookies that will be starting week 1.
5. Tuesday's big story will be... Charles Woodson's visit.

Idonije has never been a superstar but always a productive DL for Chicago, who stays healthy! Titians & 49whiners are pursuing him but he's still available probably not being offered the money he wants. Idonije would be our strongest DL & free up double team. This could be the missing piece we need for what Reggie "The Matrix" can reach for. The word is he has good character & can be a asset like C-wood... What in your thoughts Nation?

The Raiders took the field as a team for the first time for their 2013 OTA's. Here is how the first team defense lined up to start things off.

Defensive end: Lamarr Houston, Andre Carter

Defensive tackle: NT Pat Sims, DT Vance Walker

Strongside Linebacker: Kaluka Maiava

Middle linebacker: Nick Roach

Weakside linebacker: Sio Moore

Cornerback: Mike Jenkins, D.J. Hayden (with Joselio Hanson in nickel)

Strong safety: Tyvon Branch

Free safety: Usama Young

The team switched off who was playing at right and left end between Houston and Carter. Miles Burris hurt his knee early in practice and did not take part in team drills. Tracy Porter suffered a calf strain in position drills and did not take part in team drills.

There are no real surprises in this unit, per se. Unless you consider two rookies (DJ Hayden and Sio Moore) starting to be surprising. It's clear they have big plans for Moore. He spent a good amount of time with his hand on the ground.

Oakland Raiders May Be Better Than Everyone Thinks They Are

According to the national media and nearly everyone outside of Oakland, the Raiders are the worst team in the NFL, mired in a decade-long slump and once again in the so-called “rebuilding” process that stands for “we suck but we’re just calling it a ‘rebuild’ to keep everyone’s hopes up.”

Ask Raiders fans though, and they’ll say all that talk is nothing but a pile of baloney.

A’s were counted as down and out before the start of the 2011-2012 season. So-called experts predicted them to lose at least 100 games with a roster full of misfits: minor leaguers and washed-up veterans. Yet somehow, they found a way to rally in the second half of the season, winning the AL West in stunning fashion and nearly advancing to the AL Championship Series.

We could be seeing a similar optimistic fate in the Raiders, who nearly everyone believes will be among the worst franchises in the league next season.

Well, everyone except for their fans, that is.
