The gun lobbyists say, "if you make guns illegal, only criminals will have guns." Yet it seems that every time one of these mass shootings takes place, the shooter has a clean record, right up to the point when he starts spraying bullets. Till then he was just another gun loving American. I realize that this is a touchy subject. I've lived in rural areas of our country where hunting is a tradition and people look at firearms as tools rather than killing machines. These folks are very protective of their gun rights, and rightfully so. Still, it seems that some sort of balance has to be struck. Do we just accept the fact that these mass shootings are part of life in America? On a day like today, that just doesn't seem good enough.
Can we keep the liberal gun control BS out of here please?

Things like this don't happen because people own guns, it happens because some people are f'ing crazy.

There are over 200 million guns in the US, and every once in awhile some psychotic person gets his hands on one. That's a pretty low ratio.

And the thing with crazy people is if/when they snap, and if they want to hurt people, they'll find a way. Get in a car and run people over. Mass arson. Chainsaw. You name it.

Taking people's rights away because of a handful of psychotic people is the answer? I don't think so. That's not freedom.

I would rephrase this as "let's keep the politics (all sides) out of this." It's a tough day for those families. Politics can come later, in an appropriate forum.

Obviously you feel that this is an acceptable price to pay for "freedom". A decision made much easier by the fact that you and your loved ones weren't in that theater. Did you bother to check with any of the victims to see if they were willing to pay your price for you?
As I stated earlier, I've lived in areas where hunting is a tradition. I've hunted deer and elk and I owned several firearms. I had a legitimate need for them. Today I live in a large city. I no longer hunt, so I no longer own firearms. If I need protection, I call the police and since I have no plans to overthrow a government anytime soon, I have no legitimate need for firearms. You may choose to characterize that as "liberal gun control BS", but I prefer to think of it as an intelligent response to a common sense problem.
I'm still waiting to hear an intelligent response from you. Perhaps one that doesn't include a chainsaw.

That's exactly why I won't be attending movies unless I can defend myself by bringing my firearm. If not then I'll just wait till it comes out on DVD and watch in in the safety of my home with my guns. Now you'll have to start going through metal detectors at movies because of this. They should start having off duty police there or armed security at the minimum. What is this world coming to. You can't even go to a movie now without worrying about getting killed. Godbless the families and the community and my the shooter burn in hell for killing innocent people especially children. What a sick sick animal.

Take it to PMs if you'd like to be educated. This thread is for positive thoughts & prayers going out to those hurt by this tragedy.

(And FYI, I don't need anyone to pay a price for my freedom. I already did that in the military.)

I understand where you are coming from and respect it but after things like this happen everyone is quick to point the finger. Blame guns, movie violence,tv violence, music, parents or whatever you want to blame. The fact is that this is the world we live in today and it won't ever change in fact it's going to get worse not better. I have my own personal opinions in why things like this happen but that's it it's just an opinion. Know one really knows why it happens but it does I think it's a combination of everything honestly. It's just what this world we live in has come to. I blame it on multiple different things in our society but there isn't anything we can do except protect yourself educate ourselves you can't take guns away you can't blame it on this or that. Theaters need better security now Situations like this has forced theaters too. We can go on and on about this but the fact is it is what it is and we just need to come to grips that this is our reality in the life we live in today.

    what about this guy

"Rohrs said he lost his 4-month-old son, Ethan, in the darkness and chaos of the theater, but got out himself."

"You need to read some other interviews of this coward. He set the baby on the floor because he was crying and he was afraid the crying would attract the shooter's attention and get himself shot. He jumped off the balcony, abandoning his 2 young children and girlfriend, he GOT IN HIS VEHICLE AND DROVE AWAY. She reached him on a cell phone and he came back to pick them up."

If you want to put it in perspective, here are the victims:

Over the weekend I found out I did know one of the victims. I'll leave it anonymous out of respect.

Such a tragedy. My heart goes out to all their families.

Formal charges coming in a week in Colorado shootings:

Editor's note: The man accused of opening fire in a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, is set to make his first court appearance Monday, giving the public its first look at the suspect since his arrest in an attack that authorities say was planned months in advance. We're live blogging the court appearance, which begins at 11:30 a.m. ET.

[Posted at 11:45 a.m. ET] Holmes' hair was dyed a bright orange during his court appearance Monday.
