This true story leads to possibly the greatest day in my life no joke!
In 2004, the music director at our school created a jazz big band. We were very average, but were enjoyable to listen to and slowly progressed to playing at major competitions, including a national comp in 2005.
Our band raised the bar a notch in 2006 and in the national comp, we went up a division, getting 6th place out of around 25 bands.
We were expecting to do even better in 2007, but we again received the same 6th place. This was awful, and I vividly remember many of us crying at the result. We felt as if it was rigged, yet at the same time, we knew we couldn't do anything about it. The feeling was a million times worse than the Raiders SB loss to the Bucs a few years before.
Anyway, the national competition for 2008 was held this past weekend. After we had played, I was telling my mates that I knew we were going to win this year. Everything that week had gone right: Man United won the champions league final, Adelaide United made Australian soccer history, and my horse won. I knew that this was our week.
Now, I was sitting with 4 mates at the announcement of the awards. All of us have been in the band since the beginning and we've all felt the highs and lows of the band. We were announced winners of our division! It was seriously the greatest moment in my life. Looking at my best mate, Rob, who was delirious the year before, jumping up and down, shouting across the room filled with at least a couple of thousand people was a moment I'm never going to forget.
We then all got to go on the stage and receive a small limestone momento of the occasion.
Our band were just average players, and now we're one of the top 9 school bands in Australia. It might not really mean that much to you guys when you read this, but this is easily the best moment in my life.
Getting to experience such a high after experiencing an awful low the year before was so great. Even better was the fact that I enjoyed this with so many people who are great mates.
Below is a picture of all three bands that went to the national comp this year. Two bands won their division whilst the other came second in their division.
There's also a nice article on wikipedia of our band. The link is
