A Great Read on Russell

This article is a great read on Jamarcuss Russell. Really goes beyond the player and talks about the man. I think it puts to rest a lot or the character and work ethic myths that are out there.

Some quotes...
Quote:
Then there are his good deeds out of uniform: the 20 people he housed for a month in his apartment after Hurricane Katrina, including his girlfriend's grandfather, otherwise known as Fats Domino; the green bracelet that reads "Donate Life" to show support for organ and tissue donors, in honor of his uncle Ray Ray Russell, who needs a heart transplant.

...

"My goal is to be a better person and a better teammate," he says, in the same yes, ma'am, no, sir, manner he answers every question.

...

Last season, Russell threw for 2,443 yards and 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions and played most of the fall with a right wrist injury. By the end of the year he needed surgery to repair ligament damage in his wrist.

...

Russell says he wasn't bothered that his coach said his starting job was open to competition, even though he led the Tigers to an 11-2 record and a No. 5 final ranking last season.

"That was his way of telling me that I had to work my tail off if I wanted to be that guy," Russell says. "It made me stronger as a person to go out there and get the job done."

...

Growing up, Russell was surrounded by a family that firmly kept his cleats planted in the turf. One time in high school, after he threw for four touchdowns in a game, Ray Ray wanted to take out his nephew the next morning and treat him to a big breakfast. Russell couldn't go. He was cutting the grass.
You can read the full piece here http://www.usatoday.com/sports/colle...-russell_x.htm

This is an eye opener for those who question his work ethic and his character.

It's from USA today, not the best paper in the world, but I don't think they have resorted to making things up yet.

Yeah, if I was a poor to working class kid from Mobile, it would be hard not to think about the fact that you are about to change the entire history of your family on one day in April, it's kind of crazy when you think about it. I think he has his priorities straight and will work hard for whoever picks him.

Yeah, and what the article doesn't say is that Russell HAD NO CLUE who Fats Domino was. There is a clip on youtube of him saying "I don't know who he is", "I guess he was something special in his time". Are you kidding me?? did Russell just come out from under a rock? who the hell has NEVER heard of Fats Domino? Just goes to show you this kid has no idea of what's going on around him. And did anybody see his press conference? All this guy is worried about is "gettin' paid",

Golden Rule: YOU ALWAYS AVOID PLAYERS WHO ARE MONEY MOTIVATED INSTEAD OF WINNING MOTIVATED!!

Do you think Quinn or Calvin Johnson would EVER be dumb enough to say something like what Russell said? the answer is no, because they have more class and are WAY more mature. Russell should have stayed for his senior season and grew up a little. No Thanks to wasting our 1st overrall pick on "Lazy" Russell.

What an argument. The guy's going to be a horrible football player in the NFL because he doesnt know who fats domino is??? Wow, that's a great in-depth football analysis. Couldnt ask for more. Also arguing a point that some people are mature, then in the next sentence lowering yourself to try and degrade an individual by calling them "Lazy" doesnt make sense. I think both Quinn & Calvin Johnson would be embarrassed to have their names in that post.

Actually dude, it does say that...

Quote:
"I didn't really know who he was or what he did, but I had the chance to find out more about him," Russell says. "He was 'the thing' back in his day."
Glad you have an open mind and read the piece.
