We will take a QB in the first round.
I predict that the Raiders with their first round pick take...
JaMarcus Russell. It's obvious we need a QB and he is a both of the things Al loves--Freak Athlete and cannon of an arm for that deep ball. Thoughts? |

Russel should stay in school, he's no starter in the NFL.

To those of you who want a QB in the first round, my question to you is why? He wouldn't be starting anytime soon and until the Raiders fix the running game and offensive line it doesn't matter who is taking the snaps it's going to be a diaster.

I think some here believe that its doesn't matter if we fix the line or not a good QB will be able to win games. News flash, its hard to pass when you are on your back or running for you life. Conversley a good running back can somewhat overcome a poor line, moreso than a QB anyway. But until the line is addressed any QB will have problems here.

1. Opportunities to draft potential franchise quarterbacks are relatively rare. The Raiders missed one last year, and in some ways they're paying for it now (see: what Leinart has done with an equally bad offensive line). It's not as if teams can go get one of these guys anytime and, hopefully, the Raiders don't find themselves in position to do it often. 2. I don't buy the argument that he won't be starting anytime soon. All three of the guys taken in the first round last year are starting. Alex Smith started seven games last year. Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger were starters by midway through their rookie seasons. Byron Leftwich started 13 games his rookie year. Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman were instant starters. In an ideal world a rookie quarterback could sit a year and learn behind a decent vet (i.e. Carson Palmer in Cincy) but that's certainly not a requirement. 3. Along with good coaching, having a franchise quarterback is the best way to guarantee a team consistent success. Think about it, over the past decade or so, which teams have been the most consistent winners? New England. Indy. Green Bay. Philly. Tennessee. Denver. Pittsburgh. With the exception of the last two, they've all built these consistently good teams around a franchise quarterback. And both the exceptions - Pittsburgh and Denver - have shown that they too believe in the importance of a franchise quarterback by using high first-round picks on recent years on the position. Go deeper into league history and you'll find the same thing: sonsistent winners are built around franchise quarterbacks. Dallas with Aikman and before that Staubach. Denver with Elway. San Francisco with Montana then Young. Miami with Marino. Buffalo with Kelly. Pittsburgh with Bradshaw. Oakland with Stabler. Minnesota with Tarkenton. Having a franchise quarterback is no |
