draft philosophy

I dont think a player can be taken too high. Trading down is a risk seeing that you dont know if someone will trade up to get your man. It's risky. I think its better to trade down if you have a couple players with nearly identical value on your draft boards and you know you will come out with one of those players. If the Raiders like Dan Cody and he stands out... **** trading down, just take him. (used him as an example, not saying he is thee best, that is subjective)

Picking at the #7 slot is kinda right at the cusp this year. Its just about where the blue chip players peter out. Lookit the talent at the top spots (subject to subjective interpretation, of course). We could have one of these guys if we just stay put. If we don't want any of these dudes.... we might as well trade down.

Aaron Rodgers
Cedric Benson
Mike Williams
Derrick Johnson
Antrel Rolle
Alex Smith
Carnell Williams
Ronnie Brown
Braylon Edwards

For those of you thinking RB, here are official senior bowl height /weight From Great Blue Draft Report.

RB Carnell Williams Auburn 5-10.1 206

RB J.J. Arrington California 5-8.3 206

They said Carnell looks skinny from the waist down and Gruden/Bucs are all over him

I think in the Raiders situation, trading down is a good idea. I agree with you that trading down is risky if there is one particular player or position you need to fill, but since we have a lot of holes and needs (RB, DL, LB, OL) I would not have a problem with trading down and picking up an extra pick.

Of course, a lot can change between now and the draft, especially after free agency where we may fill certain holes and leave others that must be filled through the draft.

I hope the Raiders have other players they like better than Cody. I am not real high on him.

Unless Benson or Johnson fall to #7 then we should trade down for additional picks and a RB.

It's pretty simple to me. We have to do one of 2 things or both before the draft or we're screwed. 1. re-sign Porter 2. get a RB signed. If we do 1 and not the other we have to stay put. The best value at the top is defiantely in WR and RB. If we lose Porter and get a FA back we have to stay put and take a WR. If we re-sign Porter and have no back, we stay put and make sure we get the best available RB. If we sign both Porter and a RB then i'm all for trading back for more picks. If we do neither we're in trouble because we won't have enough draft picks in the entire draft to fill our holes.

Pass on smith and rodgers. No real need for a qb right now especially that high.

Of course a player can be taken too high. Let's see.

Nap Harris- 1st Round: Has played like a late 6th rounder but he was chosen in the first.

Phillip Buchannon- 1st round: The defense was better without him on the field during the last two games and Al moved up to get him.

Namdi Asomugha- 1st Round: May turn out to be a solid CB someday, he did show signs of improvement this year. But the guy would have been around in the second or even third round.

Tyler Brayton- 1st Round: A for effort young man, but the fact is this dude has no moves. He'll get better with time and of course it's not his idea to cover wide receivers, but Brayton would likely have lasted until the second.

Sam Williams- High 3rd Round: If Sam can ever stay off the IR for an entire season he might be a player.

Tuiasosopo- 2nd Round: I wish this guy would have started over Collins, but oh well. A second round pick that's seen the field when the moon turns blue.

Some insist that Janokowski was chosen too high, but all I point to now is that Jet vs. Steelers divisional playoff game two weeks ago. If the Jets had a kicker as solid as Jano they would have been playing in New England this past Sunday rather than the sorry ass Steelers.

The first two guys on the list really make me want to vomit-P. Buchannon and Nap Harris. By now these two clowns should be top tier at their respective positions but both aren't even missed when they're not on the field. I'll begrudgingly give Erkel some credit for some marginal improvement towards the end of the season but to get an assessment of his value to this team just look at the last two games of the season where he was on the sideline. The defense had more heart and played together.

As for Nap Harris, he's a slow moving side to side blocking dummy. He can't cover, he takes bad angles, and his reaction time... A creeping charlie could pass him like a rocket ship. I remember in preseason he said he was going to be Rob Ryan's Visa card-everywhere he wants me to be. He turned out to be more like my debit card in my wife's hands-plastic, abused, and out of sorts.

Two guys taken in the same first round within 8 picks of each other. I can't blame Al for these two losers. Lots of teams wanted them but we got stuck with them.

That's why I'm hopeful for this year's draft. We can't go wrong if we're picking in the top ten now, can we?

Hey, I remember there was this one cat named Rickey Dudley...

yeah we have picked people "too high" and that is easy to see after the fact.. You can look like a genious but I doubt every player you wanted the Raiders to pick wasn't going to "bust". If you like a player and believe he could help your team friggin pick him... thats what FA is for... to band aid your mistakes in the draft... but dont expect FA to cure all the wounds (Warren Sapp, Ted Washington)
