Analyzing the RBs: 2007 - 2012 Drafts

In this thread I will going draft by draft to look at who succeeded, who failed, and who has hung on to still contribute in this competitive league. For the moment with this data I've ignored the kick and punt return numbers and focused on the actual running stats. I will also be ignoring the RBs that were drafted to specifically play FB in the NFL, but have included players like Brian Leonard and Jason Snelling who are hybrid backs and have seen time at RB and FB.

Things I'm focusing on with my analysis:

- I'm highlighting Super Bowl champions, Pro Bowlers, players who have broken or set franchise records, etc.
- Starts out of possible Games played
- Who is still playing in the NFL (starter or backup doesn't matter)
- 1000+ yard rushing seasons
- 500+ yard rushing seasons
- 20+ Yard runs/attempts
- 40+ Yard runs/attempts
- Production vs. Draft position
- Difference in production of drafted players compared to UDFAs

This data will be presented in a couple of different ways:

(1) Cut up of the Draft showing drafted position, college, and NFL team.
(2) Summary of my findings for that Draft
(3) Context and "Value" of Pick: Showing players (2) before and after each RB
(4) Analysis

This project was an idea of RaiderAg's, but I think I've taken this farther and made it more intense than either of us had originally discussed or planned. With this detail and tedious nature it is taking me a little longer than I had hoped and I'm just now completing my initial data on the 2007 Draftees. My plan is to do this detailed work for each of the drafts and then compare the results to look for trends and differences. I made this original post so that any of you who may have a certain number crunched or a certain detail added to the above so I could make said changes to my 2007 Data before I post it.

Note: I apologize for the mess (and delay) of the Raw Data and analysis below and sadly there is nothing I can do about it as the ability to present data in chart form (as basic as I made these) is impossible with the input system on this forum. Also understand all of these numbers are available through the NFL's website and other sources if you need or want to see them presented more clearly than I am able to offer you. That said I hope you all enjoy and can learn something from the info below.

Summary:

The 2007 Draft Class gave us one of the best RBs to ever suit up in the NFL -- Adrian Peterson. Peterson and the other 1st Round -- Marshawn Lynch -- have combined for a total of 6 Pro Bowls; the only RBs from this draft to be selected. Of this overall group 4 Players (Brandon Jackson, Ahmad Bradshaw, Pierre Thomas, and DJ Ware) have been apart of 6 Super Bowl winning teams. AP, Lynch and Bradshaw have combined for a total of 10 1000+ yard rushing seasons. Only 8 of the 19 RBs drafted (10 of 22 counting UDFAs) are still on NFL rosters.

The RBs drafted in the 1st (Peterson and Lynch) and 7th (Snelling and Bradshaw) in this draft had the most success. Michael Bush, of the other drafted backs rounds 2-7, is about the only one to have a positive career (still in the league, yards, starts, etc.). The UDFA RBs were highly successful with 2 of the 3 being part of SB winning teams and those same 2 still being effective members of NFL teams 6 years later.

Of this group there were 10 (9 from Peterson and Lynch) 1000+ rushing yard seasons and 23 (with a crazy 9 coming from the Round 7 players and UDFAs) 500+ rushing yard seasons.

The Vikings got great value out of the Peterson pick as the other players drafted around him are average to below average (more the latter) and have not had great NFL careers. Lynch was a good pick for the Bills, for Value, though Patrick Willis the pick before and Darrelle Revis selected two picks later have both had outstanding NFL careers and are still playing at that high level.

Rounds 2 and 3 were overall failures across the board -- with most of the RBs drafted during those rounds being out of the league within a few years. The remaining players have been journymen or depth players. As far as length of career and stats Michael Bush is the only player to really accomplish much in rounds 2-6.

Will be interesting to see how this draft compares to the more recent ones in regards to success of 1st rounders and 7th rounders (and UDFAs) compared to the middle rounds. Was really surprised to see a failure of the middle round picks as far stats/games played and the # of them still in the league.

I hope to find the time later to dig deeper to see exactly why some of the guys failed and washed out and why some are still in the NFL and playing at such a high level. I do know some had injury problems and others likely got lost in Coach/GM changes or other problems.

Kenny Irons (2007 Rd.2 Pick 49)

Note:

During the second quarter of the Bengals first preseason game against the Detroit Lions on August 9, Irons tore his ACL on his fourth carry of the game, ending his rookie season. Irons was expected to recover fully and be ready for spring workouts. After the conclusion of the 2007 regular season, Irons said he expected to be ready for training camp in July 2008. However on July 25, Irons was waived/injured by the Bengals and subsequently placed the reserve/PUP list. He was waived from the PUP list on August 4.

Summary:

The best RB to come out of this class was the last RB drafted in the 1st Round -- Chris Johnson. Only player from this class to go over 2K yards and also went over 1K yards all of his 5 years in the league, even in his 'down' year back in 2011. Despite many Raiders' fans disappointment in the ability of Darren McFadden trying to stay healthy and contribute I think he actually did more than for his team than any other RB in the first outside of Chris Johnson. That said where he was drafted (4th overall and 1st RB in this draft) I think he has been extremely underwhelming and should have been the one to have the seasons Chris Johnson has had. The other interesting thing to note is that all of the 1st round guys have talent, but have all (except for CJ2K) struggled with injury problems that have limited their ability to help their teams. Overall the 2nd Round pair have probably had the most success of any round. Matt Forte and Ray Rice have both been Pro Bowlers and huge contributors to any offense that their teams are able to achieve.

Outside of the first two rounds the best RB to be drafted was Jamaal Charles out of Texas. The Chiefs struck gold with this kid and he has repaid them with 3 (of 5) 1000+ yard seasons, the best 1st down % from the '08 class, tied for best 40+ Yard Runs %, and being voted to two Pro Bowls. Charles is an exception to most mid-to-late round picks and likely see his success continuing with Andy Reid now in KC. Hoping to see if the deeper the class (like 08) at RB increases the likelihood of a RB ,taken in the 3rd or later, is a trend or just luck of the draw with players like Charles. With shallower drafts like 07 there was far less success with late round guys.

Of the remaining drafted players there were a few who have had success as spot starters or short term (1 or 2 years) starters. This list includes Ryan Torrain (5th round), Tim Hightower (5th round), Peyton Hillis (7th round), and Justin Forsett (7th round). Compared to the '07 class I think this one produced more capable late round picks and again I hope to see if this trend continues in the 09-12 drafts.

The 6th Round was awful and not a single player drafted in that round has contributed anthing of merit to the teams that drafted them or any other. The same held true
for the '07 group and will yet be another trend I intend to keep my eye on moving forward. Seems to be the worst round for RBs - not just having success or contributing in the league but even still being in the league at this point.

Much like '07 there were some quality UDFAs that made teams and have contributed greatly. None more-so than BenJarvus Green-Ellis who has had outstanding seasons withthe Patriots and more recently with the Bengals. He is not an explosive (lacks burst and true top end speed) player as he has rather low numbers in the 40+ and 20+ yard runs compared to other successful backs in this draft class. I'll have to look back, but I assume that was one of the bigger factors in him going undrafted. Danny Woodhead has also found success -- mainly as a pass down RB offering up good pass protection, pass catching, and shiftiness when called upon run the ball. Much like Green-Ellis we see a lack of explosive plays and ability from Woodhead as a runner.

Again I really hope to see if the trend continues with the idea of more RBs in the draft = more success from said RBs, when I examine the 09-12 classes. Compared to the overall performance of '07 vs. '08 there is definitely an upper hand in regards to yardage, explosiveness, and success for the '08 group. Should also be noted that
there were less Super Bowl winning RBs in this group (only Mendenhall) than the '07 (6 total SB wins) one and I'm not quite sure what to make of that. Seems that the idea of RBs being less important (in regards to draft position/value) could be showing itself in that trend as less of the 1st/early round picks have had success at getting the Lombardi trophy.

Summary:

Overall this RB class was extremely underwhelming. The two best players were a 2nd Round selection (McCoy) and an UDFA (Foster). Again (like the '07 & '08 classes) the 6th round picks seemed to be lacking in all facets of their game even those that are still in the league aren't head turners or game changers. If the trend continues that I see developing (yes, I see trends everywhere) it looks like the best option in a "weak" RB class you're best bet is rounds 1-3 or waiting till 7th round/UDFA. With a deeper class it would probably be best to follow the same model, but 2008 showed middle picks could be effective short term runners when needed. While I'm not tracking down every UDFA that makes it to a NFL Training Camp it is amazing to see how effective some of these UDFAs have been the past few years. The problem with mid-to-late round picks and UDFAs is they all have "issues", hence them not being a 1st or 2nd round pick. Think one of the biggest issues to be considered is pass-blocking. Though there are also too many problems with RBs, and other prospects, that can't effective be quantified or we wouldn't see players like Glen Coffee drafted in the 3rd and then decide his heart wasn't in football and people like Arian Foster/Issac Redman go undrafted.

This 1st round trio was pretty terrible. Moreno didn't figure it out and/or stay healthy till this year and is really nothing special. Beanie Wells is the best of the group and he's unable to stay healthy (thanks in part to that terrible OL/QB). Production in regards to 1K and 500 yard + rushin seasons is way down overall from the '08 group and two less than the '07 group (in 1K category) even with the boost of 3 from just Arian Foster. So while there may be more players still in the NFL, especially from that 6th round, they are not really performing at a very high level.

Random fact of this draft class: Of the four 6th Round picks, all except James Davis, have been (Brown) or are (Scott & Peerman) members of the Bengals.

So, it seems to me, that strong college RBs with 'Total Game' who are drafted on Day 2...and the UDFAs tend to be the most productive. Ray Rice was a 2nd Round pick I believe too.

Correct, Ray Rice was a 2nd Round Pick and one of the more complete guys. Necessary tools like vision, speed, strength, pass protection, and the all important upside/potential. The problem is you can't quantify all of that and you can't truly account for injuries or the complete mental toughness (heart?) of a player.

In a weak class (less top talent) I think it's best to wait till the 7th/UDFA market. In a stronger class (more talent at the top) like 2008 I think you're safer drafting into Round 3 and having a good chance of finding someone who is probably capable of starting for your team.

Also some of these players failures aren't completely their own fault as coaching changes, scheme changes, and favoritism have likely ruined their fair share of dreams among these draftees. Something else to consider with players in the late rounds is you can't go into the draft expecting to draft a game changer or a starter here. All of these guys have their issues and if you're drafting someone in the late rounds its as a role player or situational player ONLY (depth, ST player).

I didn't take into account the PR/KR role of my analysis, even though it could be an important reason why certain players were drafted, because I wanted to see who was drafted where and how well they have fared as running back, not a return man. This may not be fair to some of the players, but the point of this is to see what trends are there, who's fallen through the cracks, and where your chances of finding a starter or solid RB are best met.

Summary:

Spiller was the first pick in this RB and is clearly the most talented despite Buffalo failing to really let him run wild. Matthews has shown flashes, but between his injuries and other issues he may never put it all together. Best was incredibly unlucky with the concussions that have all but knocked him out of the NFL for good. Gerhart and Tate are good complimentary backs on their respective teams and likely will only be that. This years 6th round picks were able to get 2 combined 500 yard seasons out of the 4 players drafted that round. This data might change even more with Ivory finally getting his shot to be the bellcow for the Jets. I've always been a fan of the guy and think he is more than capable of being a starter in this league, especially in a downhill PBS type system. Only 3 total 1000+ yard rushing seasons for this entire class with 1 coming from an UDFA.

Keep in mind that stats only tell part of the story as many of these guys weren't drafted as starters or were drafted for certain types of roles that they perform well...or don't. Though the point of this exercise in analysis is to see who has been the most successful based on draft position. I have high hopes for Murray, but RBs drafted in the 6th just don't seem to have a high chance of success. Again, if you aren't drafted 1st (or 2nd in a deep class) then you're better off waiting till UDFA based on this data. Though the data from this and the other drafts I've done also point to the fact that there is some risk to drafting RBs anywhere as 1st rounders have failed and others like Lynch needed a chance of scenery to perform up to their draft position.
