just as i suspected, David Ausberry has shown nothing once the pads went on.

like i've been saying, Ausberry looks phenomenal when he's playing in shorts and a t-shirt in May, but when August rolls around, he's nowhere to be found.

Richard Gordon being listed ahead of him may or may not mean anything, but according to all reports, he's done nothing to distinguish himself since camp's opened in Napa.

if he doesn't step it up, we're gonna be looking for a TE come April.

Well if Gordon (or even Efaw) steps up it won't matter. Was hoping Ausberry would show some signs of becoming the TE we needed but figured it wouldn't happen. The problem was and still is the possible replacements aren't there. No one we would have had a chance at drafting would likely have been a game changer and those in FA are all old men looking for one last pay day.

Actually think Gordon might be the better option anyway with his ability to block helping out in the scheme it appears they'll run. Houston liked a lot of 2 TE sets and having Myers and Gordon in there, both guys that can block and catch above average will benefit the run and pass.

You're right though, unless someone steps up we'll be looking for a TE next year.

The thing with Gordon is he was a blocking TE coming into the league, but flashed some real athletic potential as a guy who could catch 20 passes a year. Efaw came in out of the Boise system as a real pass catcher, especially in the red zone, he has to develop as a blocker (put on size and get his technique dialed in). The edge has to go to Gordon right now...but Efaw will likely make the practice squad, or maybe get that last roster spot because we're thin at TE. Then there's Ausberry, who just isn't there yet...the transition looks like it's going to be difficult, but maybe we can just line him up in the slot.

i think with the current group of guys, Myers starts and Gordon comes in as a blocking specialist. problem is that there's not a whole lot of talent with the guys on the roster. the Raiders will probably carry 3 TEs and if anyone else shows anything, i wouldn't be surprised to see them carry 4 or even 5 because of their value on special teams.

i'm not too high on the group of TE prospects for 2013 right now. Eifert looks solid but he's not a seam splitting TE by any means. he looks more like a poor man's version of Kyle Rudolph. solid hands, average speed. Joseph Fauria could really benefit with Mora Jr. running UCLA this upcoming season but he also has the potential to bust as well. the one guy that could slip and be of value is Stoneburner from Ohio State. unless someone comes out of the blue and blows it up, i don't see an early round talent in the bunch.

preseason draft projections have Eifert going in the 1st, but is he better than Coby Fleener?

i'd like to see the Raiders fill that position with an all-around TE who can make plays between the hashmarks.

Myers isn't terrible, but would prefer one of the younger guys, that can really stretch the field would show they were capable of the first spot.

You're right; no real impressive TEs on the radar for next year at this point for sure.

Wasn't there some talk of possibly moving Carrier to TE? Wonder if that's still in the works or if they've scraped that idea. Also wonder if Efaw's possible upside will get him a roster spot ahead of Humphrey or if the latter's blocking will be more valued.

To me the most glaring need is lack of depth in certain areas. Namely, ILB, CB (due to health and age), DT (due to age), and OT/G. Some other possibilities include replacing SS Mike Mitchell, RB Taiwan Jones and of course, finding more pass rush help at OLB/DE. Why we are solid at WR when healthy, health and a true No. 1 WR are both lacking right now. When Criner, Ford and perhaps the development of Gurley come into play, I think our depth at WR will indeed be a strength...also hoping, DHB will make a full recovery from his knock out last Sunday vs. Pittsburgh. Further bolstering our arsenal on offense may also include picking up a promising TE.

As for the issue of QB...it all depends on Carson Palmer's immediate health, Leinart's steadiness as a backup when he does get his number called, and the wild card that is Terrelle Pryor...is he more than a change of pace QB, or is he a project that is doomed to fail in the long run? Certainly, a young QB is called for, a successor to Palmer and a future for this franchise.

Well just did a run down on what it would cost to us to see if Reggie said Phuck it and released Seymour/Kelly/Huff to get out of their deals before hand and it isn't pretty $36,978,017 million in dead money to these 3 and would cripple us to do this and don't see any team that would take on their contracts as is to try and trade any of them .

That releasing just Huff and Kelly is $20,663,017 of dead money against the cap

That Seymour is $16,315,000 of dead money by himself .

So does this change some of what we do in the draft at all or do we just look at trying to get Huff to redo his deal and workout a trade for him ?

Release one of the other two players Seymour or Kelly ? Which one do we with here $16 million hit or the $9 million hit ?

Some Notes and Impressions from WF.com

    Interesting...seems about right:

Oakland needs to improve its talent on the defensive line. If the Raiders can add a defensive end, they could move Lamarr Houston to the inside to replace/rotate with veterans Richard Seymour and Tommy Kelly. Oakland entered the game with Atlanta with only three sacks on the season, so the team has to upgrade its pass rush.

If the Raiders has any free agency dollars, they could target a defensive end like Tampa Bay's Michael Bennett or Cincinnati's Michael Johnson. Either one would be a nice upgrade for Oakland. That would allow the team to potentially use its first-round pick on a tackle like Star Lotulelei or Johnathan Hankins.

If the Raiders have a top-10 pick, they'll have to look at a quarterback, but with a veteran like Carson Palmer, they don't have to force it. Oakland can wait a year if it isn't in love with a signal-caller. The Raiders need to upgrade their talent base across the team, so if the best player available is a cornerback, offensive lineman or defensive tackle, the team should take them. Once Oakland improves its talent base across the roster, the franchise can start addressing specific positions in the years to come.
