Jerrell Powe
6-2 330lbs. Ole Miss
Nose Tackle
2009: 30 Tackles, 11 Tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 interception
don't know if many of you guys know of him, but he was a highly recruited high school prospect that basically ate his way out of shape after going to Ole Miss. he shed a bunch of weight and has been an absolute force this season. he's got prototypical NT size and strength, plays with great leverage and has short area quickness and burst. i've heard him compared to BJ Raji by some draftniks, but IMO is not on Raji's level when it comes to athleticism. Powe does have a very good motor and is strong at the point of attack.
could be a 2nd round pick if he declares for the draft.
I'm keeping my eye on him and Cam Thomas of NC. Funny thing Jerrell Powe was highly rated coming out of high school but there was this cat named Callahan Bright that was recruited by my Noles that was rated higher and never made it on the field due to academics. I wonder if he would be a surprise name to enter the NFL draft. Waste of talent if you ask me.
that's exactly why being a 5 star athlete out of high school is overrated. you look at freshman all-American teams and there are only two or three 5 star guys on that list and everyone else is 3 or 4 star guys.
the top DTs that year were Bright, Demarcus Granger and Powe. Suh, Roy Miller (Texas), Vince Oghobaase (Duke), and Kade Weston (Georgia) were all 4 star guys and surging Dan Williams (Tennessee) was a 3 star.
there's definitely something to be said about hard work to go along with talent and putting time in the class room to be successful in college.
How did I miss this thread? I would love to draft Powe sometime late in the draft. He went through alot to get the chance to play football.
BTW, he didn't "eat his way out of shape". He was academically in-eligible after high school (his own mother said he couldn't read) and he had to go to military school and do a bunch of other stuff so that he could go to Ole Miss:

I think having to overcome obstacles like that makes a person more grateful for the opportunities they get. You draft this guy in the 5th or 6th round and he could come in and work his ass off to get a contract and have a career in the NFL.
Besides, all we really need is a big NT to rotate in and out with Warren. If he beats Warren out for the starting job, great. If not, a 5th or 6th round pick is no big loss.
fire hydrant nose tackles with actual football ability are in super high demand by teams with 3-4 defenses. I doubt a legit two-gap like Powe will last to the fifth, but I agree he could be worth a flier.
I'm still not convinced everything with his weight is hunky dory, but I agree he could be a steal if he falls to the later rounds. I like prospects who can actually play the game well. That seems to be Powe.
BTW, I'm total sap for that kind of underdog narrative, especially with the surrogate father theme. I hope he's successful.
i follow a lot of recruiting so i was aware of Powe's academic issues. what i was regarding to was the fact that he was up to 383lbs last year and rededicated himself to football after watching his teammate Peria Jerry get drafted in the 1st round. i guess i condensed everything and left out all the important stuff. check out this article....you'll appreciate this guy even more:
Ole Miss junior Powe makes commitment to self, team The Commercial Appeal
i too am partial to players who have overcome adversity. they are far better than prospects who have entitlement issues that can manifest itself later when they get huge contracts. guys who've gone through adversity seem better grounded and have an understanding of priorities, IMO.
that's why i wanted Oher last year....and another reason why i like players like Brian Price and Jerrell Powe. Powe seriously reminds me of Gilbert Brown. if the Raiders drafted him with one of their 3rd rounders i would be ecstatic.
Scott Wright has his new 2011 Mock Draft up, and he has our boy POWE going in the middle of the FIRST round, to the Steelers to eventually succeed NT Casey Hampton.
Nice early call here though!
