Potential trade partners for #4

At our current #4 spot in the upcoming draft there WILL be a great prospect sitting there, either for us to take or for someone to make a move for. To me, the most likely two candidates to slide into that spot are McFadden and Gholston. Let's first look at the rushing statistics for 2007, plus recent FA moves, and determine who else might be interested (plus have the ammo) in trading to our slot for a shot at D-Mac or Ghost.

Now assuming that a team in the top 50% of the league in rushing would not be interested in D-Mac, let's eliminate them and look at the off season moves, plus current rosters, from the rest. From top to bottom (starting at #17), here are the team rushing leaders from last year:

17. Dallas Cowboys: Everyone’s favorite trade partner prospect. They cut Julius Jones, leaving them needing, at least, a #2 RB.
18. Indianapolis Colts: A passing team, set with a young runner and Keith as a serviceable backup.
19. New York Jets: Signed Damien Woody (G), Tony Richardson (FB) and Jesse Chatman (RB). The Jets have made several big moves this off season, moves which smack of a desperate coach and GM. D-Mac might be another big name for them to consider, as they play CYA
20. Seattle Seahawks: Signed TJ Duckett (RB) and Julius Jones (RB). Will probably cut Shaun Alexander, leaving them with Morris as their starter, in theory.
21. Green Bay Packers: They have several young backs to develop.
22. Houston Texans: Signed Chris Brown to back up Ahman Green, could still use a stud RB, though.
23. Miami Dolphins: Tuna says he’s satisfied going into the season with Brown and Williams as his #1 and #2. Cough *BS* cough…I believe him, don’t you?
24. Cincinnati Bengals: Two good RB’s on the roster at this time, though Rudi Johnson seems to be wearing down.
25. St. Louis Rams: Signed Brandon Gorin (T), Adam Goldberg (T) and Jacob Bell (G). Obviously looking to improve the line in order to help out Jackson.
26. Atlanta Falcons: Signed Michael Turner (RB) and Alex Stepanovich (C).
27. San Francisco 49ers: Just signed Foster as their #2.
28. New Orleans Saints: Resigned Aaron Stecker. McAllister is coming off of the injury, so who knows how he’ll be, health-wise, as the season approaches. The thought of pairing D-Mac with Bush must be entering Payton’s mind, especially if there is a fear that Deuce’s injury will linger.
29. Arizona Cardinals: Have Edge, Shipp and JJ Arrington at RB…so they could use an upgrade. A young stud back to go with their passing game has to be a consideration for them.
30. Chicago Bears: Not much behind Cedric Benson, so they should be looking for a back somewhere in the draft. Also, talent-wise the Bears are falling farther and farther behind in their division. D-Mac could help to close that gap some.
31. Detroit Lions: Cut Kevin Jones. Signed Aveion Cason (RB), George Foster (T), Tatum Bell (RB) and Corey Hulsey (G). A player like D-Mac might help Millen to keep his job a bit longer.
32. Kansas City Chiefs: Signed Boomer Grigsby. They are connected at the hip financially to LJ, plus I don’t think that they would offer us a blockbuster trade deal anyway!

Here again is the draft order for this April’s big event and some notes on who might want to move up:
1 Dolphins- obviously in position to draft D-Mac, Ghost or anyone else, if they want them.
2 Rams
3 Falcons
4 Raiders
5 Chiefs- almost have to go OL (J. Long, Clady, etc.)
6 Jets- seem desperate to improve this off-season, and have to be looking at that #4 spot for either D-Mac or Ghost.
7 Patriots- might want to jump ahead of the Jets for Ghost, if he’s still on the board.
8 Ravens- in a pissing contest with Suggs, an DE/OLB hybrid like Ghost.
9 Bengals- desperately need to improve on D, plus have a starting RB who looks like he’s breaking down.
10 Saints- what’s the behind-the-scenes status of Deuce? The Saints need LB’s and possibly another RB. Again the thought of a D-Mac / Bush backfield has to excite Payton.
11 Bills
12 Broncos
13 Panthers- looking to deal Peppers. Ghost might be attractive to them.
14 Bears- pathetic running the ball last year, need to do something to catch up to division.
15 Lions- need a stud RB, have a stud WR on the trading block, supposedly.
16 Cardinals- Edge is past his prime and they have nothing behind him.
17 Vikings- I think they’re set at RB!
18 Texans- need a better RB than Green / Brown.
19 Eagles
20 Buccaneers
21 Redskins
22 Cowboys- as good as Barber is, Jones might have it in his head that they are an impact RB away from a title. Ghost would also be a good fit for their 3-4.
23 Steelers
24 Titans
25 Seahawks- are a mess at RB right now, with the immanent release of Alexander.
26 Jaguars
27 Chargers
28 Cowboys
29 49ers- inability to run the ball was due to injuries, not talent.
30 Packers
31 Giants

Whew! Ok, that's all the brain power I can muster for now. What scenarios do you see someone moving up into our #4 slot?

I maintain anyone currently picking #6 (Jets) through #16 (Cardinals) could be a trade partner (except the Broncos). The Cardinals might not be players, but you better bet Detroit will be.

Here's a question to Gholston peeps......and the peeps who think we need a DE (myself included just not at 4 unless it's Long)......why not go out and get Roosevelt Colvin (20 yrs old) so that we fill another need and can spend our pick on something else?

Because he's about as injury-prone as a player can be for one thing. For another thing he's really more of a 3-4 OLB than a DE.

He can still get the job done! He had 6 sacks last year, and is still a potential 10 sack guy when healthy. Hell, Gholston would be a better 3-4 OLB than a 4-3 DE too! And seeing as though no one is bidding for Colvin, he'd come cheap, which a lot of people on here love lol

Chris Clemons is 6'3" 240 lbs.

Roosevelt Colvin is 6'3" 250 lbs.

I agree that he IS injury-prone, yet; when healthy he is a proven pass rusher. He has 52.5 sacks and 17 FF over his 9 year career. If we could sign him to an incentive based contract (due to his injury problems), then get him on the cheap. Note: R. Colvin has played on a Super Bowl Team. We need players that have that playoff mentality and experience.

Hey, if signing Colvin means we draft a LT in the first round I'm all for it.

I think the only team that would trade with us on that list would be Dallas. For one they have two first round picks at their disposal, Dallas needs a NO.2 Back as mentioned, and another CB as well. If we get the Hall deal done that would leave us without our 2nd round pick. We could spare a RB or a CB(if the Hall deal goes through) along with our first rounder for Dallas' two first round picks this year and maybe their 2nd or 3rd rounder this year as well. And Jerry really likes Mcfadden, even though Al never trades down this year could be an exception if Jerry makes a Sweet offer to Davis to secure the 4th overall pick.

I've got to disagree with you on that point. Gholston does have the athletic ability and versatility to play a 3-4 OLB, but he is more effective when he's lined up as a DE where he can take advantage of his speed and strength to disrupt the QB's timing or cause havoc with his pass rush.
