Looks like a quality pick, but we have too many higher rated needs (OT / DT) to risk #4 on him. Fortunately we should be sitting pretty to draft the BPA at our need spots, or to take McFadden.

Personally I would take him over Ellis & Dorsey! Dorsey has an injury issue which is why he is not at the combine, even if he didn't want to work out he should have still been there for the medical and interviews. Gholston is faster and stronger than Ellis and would make a great bookend opposite of Burgess.
We can get a DT in the 2nd or 4th or even trade for Rogers to clog the middle but you would be hard pressed to find a DE who will apply pressure like him. Mark my words he is the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2008! If I had my choice I would trade Washington and a 2nd in 2009 for Rogers. Burgess - Rogers - Warren/Kelly - Gholston = Top 5 Dline in the NFL!!!

The only problem I have with Gholston is that he over ran a lot of plays in college. He does get in to the pocket well, but he overpursues a lot. I'm clueless on what to do in the 1st round right now because there is so many options.

Ellis is not going to hold the middle against a double team, those players can be had in the 2nd-5th RDs. (or Rogers from Detroit) Quote:
If you recall we lost 4 games we had the lead in the 4th quarter. Those teams scored the winning points because we couldn't stop the pass when it counted.

Wow, how does Gholston stack up against Chris Long? I knew Gholston was good, but is he better than Long?

I personally don't like Gholston.
When I've watched him, he has been productive at times simply because he was more athletically gifted than his college competition. But overall I've been very unimpressed with his stiff hips and his poor football instincts. Someone mentioned his habit over pursuing the ball, and that's a great example of what I've seen from him. He's got all the tools you'd dream of as a combine prospect, but I have my doubts about how well it translates onto the field in the NFL.

Personally, I think Long is everything that Gholston is not. Smart, disciplined, great instincts. Long had an incredible ability in college to play his run responsibility, diagnose pass and immediately shed his blocker(s) to get to the QB. He not only has the ability to make the high impact play, but he's also really really well rounded.

Yeah, I like Jake Long, but the truth is there are a number of players I wouldn't gripe about us picking. Gholston doesn't terrify me.
My only concern is coaching. Part of what makes me think Jake Long would be a good pick is faith in Tom Cable not to ruin or waste him.
