The Kansas City Chiefs in 2008

The Kansas City Chiefs will be a completely new team in 2008, for better or for worse. Why do I say that?
1. King Carl has finally taken a backseat to his win now approach and Herm Edwards has been given full reign to build a team primarily through youth. A much different approach to the kings approach of brining in overpriced veterans and trying to patch holes via the draft. I'm not exactly a huge fan of Herms conservative approach come game day, but he's gone a long way of improving the quality of Chiefs drafts. (Tamba Hali and Dwayne Bowe is a huge step up from the turds known as Ryan Sims and Junior Siavii)
+Glenn Dorsey and Branden Albert are going to be huge additions. No pun intended.
2. The offense will have some growing pains, but I think they will already be much better under Chan Gailey than Mike Solari. Solari tried to make a recycled, watered down Croyell offsense work for a team no longer tailored for it and the results were obvious. Chan Gailey on the otherhand will be building an offense to utilize the strengths and has ran successful offenses on multiple teams (Pittsburgh, Miami, Dallas and Georgia Tech).
+From the glimpse I had at the Chiefs open practice, Gailey looks to be installing a passing game similar to Denvers. Brodie Croyle did a lot of passing outside of the pocket and looked a lot more crisp and confident in the process.
With that, there are still many unknowns coming into this year:
-Will Brodie Croyle take command of the offense?
-Larry Johnson looks to be recovered from his foot injury, but he'll need to regain his form for Croyle to succeed.
-Will Glenn Dorsey and Tamba Hali make up for the lack of Jared Allen?
-Will our young CB's step up along with our safties?
-Will this be the year Derrick Johnson becomes the complete Linebacker?
I think our final record for 2008 is irrelevant. What is relevant is how much the team grows. This team will likely be 8-8 at best, but Croyle needs to establish himself as the team leader. I'm confident he can play a lot better, but can he remain healthy?
His success will determine when the Chiefs will be able to challenge San Diego again.

Nice to see a non biased overview of another team.
I like KC's defense. I'm sure the loss of Allen will significant but I still think they will generate plenty of pressure and force turnovers. Their offense still has a lot of work to do imo. |

Welcome to the site!
The Chiefs biggest weakness is their O-Line. I think they'll struggle to recover from tying for first in the NFL in 2007, where they gave up 55 sacks. They still have no proven serviceable replacements for retired future HOFers Roaf and Shields, and thus still struggle with pass protection and rush offense. But as you stated, they got Branden Albert early in the 1st round this year. Other OLine additions are Barry Richardson (draft), Anthony Alibi, Joe Lobdell, Rob Smith and Wade Smith. None of these guys ring a bell. Alibi was cut by Bill Parcells and Tony Sporano in Miami. From that one could thus surmise that he was part of the problem, rather than the solution, on the field. They lost John Welbourne and Chris Bober, although losing dudes from a crummy squad may be a plus. 'Til they get that line fixed or employ a scheme more suitable for their talent, they're going to be in the cellar of this division...along with us if we can't do the same damn thang. |
