Kiffin may be in over his head at Tennessee

Kiffin knew as quickly as did Davis that the two were fated to loathe each other, and yet without Davis, Kiffin could never have made the jump from his modest place in the USC coaching hierarchy to the Tennessee job.

Kiffin's war with Davis lasted only 20 games, but by the end even the truest believers on either side had seen the catastrophic flaws in both men, and by the end we were treated to notions like a 76-yard field goal attempt that wasn't about three points but a finger in the eye. The players did not weep when Kiffin left, except with envy. He had the leverage of pushing Davis' hypersensitive buttons, and an ability to sell himself without a resume.

The SEC is where you go after you've cut your teeth on something tougher than Davis' disapproval, and unless Kiffin has a lot more game than he ever showed in Oakland, he's picked an awfully big elephant to ride.

If Kiffin had tried to make things work through the season despite his differences with Davis, he doesn’t get this job.

To Kiffin, the more angry the boss got, the better. He wanted to look good for his next employer.

Kiffin will need to change up some of his tactics. Minimizing the talent on the roster and talking of erasing a losing culture isn’t going to play in Knoxville. When former Tennessee star Gibril Wilson was asked about the possibility of Kiffin taking over ther day, he gave a thumbs down.

Rashad Baker, another ex-Tennessee player, noted there wouldn’t be the level of patience Kiffin had taking over a losing program in Oakland.

Maybe its just me and some on others on here, but we long suspected that like Al Davis said, Lane Kiffin was just trying to use Oakland as a CV-padder.

I know I'm biased, but I found this fan comment funny.

When Kiffin felt pressure in Oakland, it wasn’t uncommon for him to start whining to anyone who would listen. At Tennessee, such behavior will have him out on the unemployment line before he can say “Tennessee Volunteers” three times fast.

Yeah, funny thing is how a few bay-area journalists are starting to see it that way as well.

I loved the fact that Wilson gave him the thumbs down about going to Tennessee. I thought Wilson was one of those upset to see him go?

I have to laugh at how big they make the SEC seem. Has anybody watched then this year? Yeah, they have a couple of big teams (Florida, Alabama), but look at the SEC as a whole this year. They're over-rated. So they asked some former SEC players what they thought...of course they give Kiffin a thumbs-down, becasue they're former SEC players, who think that a West Coast guy isn't good enough to coach in the "elite" SEC. What was Saban's record in the NFL...that's right, not good. So he ran off to college where he could have the say in everything.
And besides that, wasn't Kiffin the Co-offensive coordinator of some USC offenses that DESTROYED a couple of SEC teams? I think Kiffin will do just fine. The SEC is not some elite insititution where only a guy from the South would succeed or "understand".
What's more, if Kiffin's dad decides to coach the defense for him (rumor), I think that Monte won't have any problems using a traditionally fast and stingy Vols defense to stop some of these college coaches who are so "great"
