LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Reliever Scott Proctor and the Los Angeles Dodgers agreed to a one-year contract worth $1,115,000, avoiding salary arbitration.

Proctor had asked for $930,000 in arbitration and had been offered $1.3 million. He made $445,923 last season, when the Dodgers acquired him from the New York Yankees on July 31 for Wilson Betemit.

Proctor was 2-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 52 games with the Yankees and 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 31 games with the Dodgers.

He was frequently used in New York by manager Joe Torre, who left the Yankees and became manager of the Dodgers.

Left-hander Joe Beimel is the last remaining Dodgers player in arbitration. He asked for $2,125,000 and was offered $1.7 million. He made $912,500 last year after losing in arbitration.

Juan Pierre could become the highest-paid fourth outfielder in history.

Pierre, entering the second season of a five-year, $44-million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, had been expected to become the left-field starter with the arrival of free-agent center fielder Andruw Jones. Not so fast, new manager Joe Torre hinted.

Torre, in a rare off-season sighting, said Pierre will compete with Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp for the corner-outfield positions. If Ethier-Kemp is the best option on the corners, the Dodgers will go that way, Torre told reporters.

Pierre lacks the power expected of a corner outfielder. Ethier and Kemp each reached double-figures in homers and had a slugging percentage of more than .450 last season. Pierre has gone 711 consecutive at-bats without a homer and had a .353 slugging percentage last season.

Pierre brings top-quality speed to the lineup, but that did little for the club last season. The Dodgers ranked among the bottom four in the National League for homers and slugging percentage and finished 10th in runs at 4.54 per game. Torre had his most success in the NL with power-laden lineups in Atlanta.

Heres the funny part: He says:

"They asked me to try a couple of things. They wanted to see a little more movement, change my mechanics a little bit. I went into it with an open mind and thought I'd try whatever they asked."

At first, the changes looked good. He had 10 strikeouts in his first start.

"But over the next few starts, it wasn't working," he said. Soon, bad habits were formed and he could not escape a self-imposed rut.

He came up with his own bad habits and blames the Dodger coaching staff!!!!

My favorite part of last season was when we cut him. Then the Padres picked him up and I had a good laugh. Then after Hoffman blew a Wild Card clinching game against the Rockies giving up a tying hit to none other than fellow Poway High alumn Tony Gwynn Jr., they start Tomko the next night and lose again. And you all know they blew it again in the tie breaker.

LOS ANGELES - Don Mattingly won't be alongside Joe Torre in the Los Angeles Dodgers' dugout every game this year.
Mattingly will be moved from hitting coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers to major league special assignment coach for the 2008 season due to family reasons, the team said Tuesday. Mike Easler will replace Mattingly as hitting coach.
