Why we watch every game.
I was watching the last game of the ’98 season. I sincerely wanted to end it on a winning note at 5-11, but a Raider buddy was rooting for us to blow it so we’d get Woodson.
We know what happened, but that doesn’t matter. We knew the only way from there was up. What matters is that we watched that game, to the end, and the thing that mattered most was it made us appreciate upcoming Gannon years so much more.
I likely remember the turning point differently than most Raider fans. I remember the pummeling that Jeff George took at KC. I could see the difference. I watched every excruciating sack, to the end. They didn’t quit. That was a novelty compared to past seasons. I knew the turnaround was coming.
The clincher that made almost everyone believe The Raiders were back was the first game Gannon took a game in his hands, and pulled it out of defeat’s jaws. Out of defeat’s belly. What matters is, we were there to see it.
If I’ve learned anything from this board is that there actually are Raider fans I wouldn’t have a drink with, even if they were paying. On their yacht. With hookers. Kind of surprised me.
What doesn’t surprise me is the emotion of the diehard Raider fans, even the nutty ones. OK, we’re all nutty. They, err, we, may be watching just to bitch and moan, just to see what draft pick we’ll get, or maybe to see their/our least favorite player, from either team, get crushed.
What I do know is that all diehard Raider fans on this site will watch every snap of this last game on New Year’s Eve, even if they pull a Pat Swilling and throw a touchdown through the big screen. There’s always that old 13 inch TV to finish the game on, or spike, as the case may be. There will be a few posters here among the 5,000 or so die hard fans in Silver and Black in the swamps of New Jersey, screaming with a mania that may raise Jimmy Hoffa from under the goal line.
Yeah, there’s been a lot of name calling, ego flag raising, and some really petty stuff going on here this Al forsaken season, but, hey, if you can’t take it and know better things are coming, you’re probably a pansy ass dungver fan.
The offense will be rebuilt. We will have a passing game that terrorizes the NFL. We will have a running game again that will be feared across the NFL. And we will score enough points to honor our magnificent defense. I don’t doubt that. And I will watch every game because I don’t want to miss the pass, the block, the catch, or the play that is the turning point.
Good luck Raiders. As Code707 says, we’re with you, Win, Lose, or Tie.
