omfg our team was almost named the OAKLAND SENORS!
I have been addicted to this free online encyclopedia called wikipedia. I was using it to read about the history of people I like. I read about Jimi Hendrix, Layne Staley, Dimebag Darrell, and then I thought..... I wonder what I could learn about the Oakland Raiders ... so i searched that
I must say I learned some new things about the history of my favorite team anyway heres the link.... check it out you might learn something!
"A "name the team" contest was held by a local newspaper, and the winner was the Oakland Señors (After a few weeks of being the butt of local jokes, the owners changed the team's name to "Raiders," which had finished third in the contest). The original team colors were black, gold and white. The now-familar team emblem of a pirate (or "raider") wearing a football hemet was created, reportedly a rendition of actor Randolph Scott."
The Oakland Senors! Thank god they changed that. Black and Gold.... No Way man! Al Davis said Silver and Black bitch!
I guess the black and gold Raider in RandytheRaider avatar was their first.... I never knew! I'm only 23 and my earliest memory of the Raiders was my dad yelling at Steve Beuerlein in the late 80's.

here's a scan of my jim otto trading card wearing number 50 in the black gold and white uniform.
otto wore number 50 the entire 1960 season and the first 2 games of the 1961 season before becoming 00.
Al Davis changed the uniform colors to silver and black when he became head coach and general manager of the oakland raiders in 1963.
Jim Otto has some funny things to say about the Oakland Senors in his book "Jim Otto: The Pain of Glory"...
"My dream football opportunity. Then i mulled over what i was getting into, moving to a city I hadn't heard of--a city without a stadium--to play for a francise that was considering Pancho Villa as its mascot.
Was this really a dream or a nightmare."
"Can you believe such a nickmame? Oakland almost had the worst nickname in the history of sports."
"Oakland would be the laughing stock of the country if it didn't quickly change the nickname from Senors to...anything but Senors."
I've known that for a while, thanks to others on the site that have posted. Someone recently had a thread that explained stories about origins of most the team names, like the Chiefs weren't named after Native Americans, etc.
The first time I heard Senors I thought it was a joke
