Actually, you are incorrect. ANY wode receiver will tell you that RHYTHM is key to racking up recpetions. The unfortunate problem for Jerry Porter is that Randy Moss gets most of the looks and throws. And when they do get it to Porter, he's having to cath the ball near coverage unlike Moss who gets passes on slants and go patterns.

If the Raiders adopted a philosohpy of spreading the ball around, we could very well be 4-0 right now. In the Pats game, Moss was THE intended receiver and thrown to regardless of the coverage. The fluke passes to a receiver OTHER than Moss was Anderson in the endzone who was wide open. The middle of the field there for the taking. The Raiders even failed to trow to it's tight ends in the middle which would have forced the Pats to play honest instead of loading up on Moss.

In the Chiefs game, when Porter DID get passes, he had defenders on him. It's as if the Raiders have put the deep threat responsibility soley on Moss which is a mistake in my book. Send Whitted and Gabriel deep too! Then that pass at the end of the game to Porter that was dropped was thrown in TIGHT double coverage. Actually, Porter had his hands on the ball, but the defender made a good play on the ball and knocked it away. In the Eagles game, same thing happend there. Moss got the looks and other receivers got scraps. If Porter was able to get behind defenders (groin injury), he too would complete more passes. The fact of the matter is that as long as Moss is with us and the offensive co-ordinator insists on giving Moss 75-85% of the looks, then this Raider receiving corps as a whole will struggle and be inconsistent. We have to spread the ball around...PERIOD.

Instead of blaming Porter, blame the head coach, offensive co-ordinator, and Kerry Collins (for throwing errant passes at key moments).

The offense has been overrated becasue of the horrible playcalling. Moss averaged 25pts/game in Minny and he didnt have this great of an offense since 00. Hopefully Norv gets his head outta his ass and starts calling better plays suited for this offense.

This season and a few seasons before 2004 JP was sometimes overrated. But in 2004 JP played like a borderline #1 wr. Before 2004 JP had zero career catchs for 40 plus yards but last season alone he had 5 catchs for 40 plus yards. He just hasnt been the same player this season. Maybe its the hammy, maybe its no training camp, maybe he needs Curry and the 3 wr, or maybe he just isnt playing hard enough. I honestly have no idea. All I know is we need to find a way to get some or our wr some legit separation. It has been very rare. I'm all for activating Morant for a game and giving him a shot. What do we have to lose? Gabs has basically played 1 real game and he got real separation on his td. we need more of that. Some crossing routes would be good as well. Everything is vertical. Nothing horizontal. Lets get some players in stride like last season and get some yards after the catch.
    i agree bro

Missing the preseason and starting the season with a bum hamstring takes its toll. A hamstring injury will impact a player's agressiveness and speed drastically so this bye week, as has been stated many times in this thread, is especially important for him. I expect Porter to be utilized and step up his game as the season progresses. Remember, he had a slow start last year until he caught on fire...

Dude, before you start bad mouthing Porter, you should get a clue and realize that the main reason he's not getting thrown to is because our QB is incapable of finding second and third option wr's when the primary isn't available. What and who's really overrated is our QB who has no field vision to find any option other than the guy that the play is called for.So if you're looking for why Porter hasn't been a bigger part of our offense, then you need to look at someone other than him,try our QB and you'll have your answer.

Even if it meant placing Porter in the 3 spot. J.P. got a fat check, now he needs to earn it. Go on and disagree, but If Moss & C. Andersen weren't here, man it would be bad!

I agree Porter is overated even last year most of the yards were in one game against Bailey. He has never had a 1,000 yard season and is being paid like a top tier WR. It was fine when he was being paid like a number 2 but now he's making #1 money and needs to play like it. Stop with all the excuses everytime the guy doesn't produce it is an injury look at his history of injuries he is always hurt and always talking about how good he is. It is time to shut up and produce or give way to Gabriel and Morant. Gabriel has never gotten his chance and produces in the little time he plays.

I never thought Porter was a legitimate #1 reciever. Back when their were rumors that T.O. would be traded for Porter straight up, if I was the decision maker, I would do that deal in a heartbeat! Based purely on production. Chemistry issues would have been a major problem.
That being said, It is to early to say Porter is overrated. Let the season play out and then judge.
I think Collins is still finding his groove and trying to make everyone happy.
However, if you are right on Porter being overrated, then the Raiders just blew a wad of cap cash resigning him.
    Time will tell.

2 yards away from 1,000 yards... 2 yards!

Last season JP played near a #1 wr level. Last season isnt in question for me. The question is his speed this season.

Nobody that saw him run that pitch can tell me that JP was at his normal 4.5 speed on that pitch.
