2-15-03 Strength: Versatility Play recognition
Weakness: Durability Consistency
Assessment: DeWayne White had a disappointing season by many accounts but he is still a player that draws about as many double teams as any lineman in the nation. Even though he supposedly had a “down year” he still wound up putting the quarterback on the turf 12 times. White can be a first round selection due to the fact that he is very versatile and is one of the only prospects that can literally line up anywhere on a defensive line. White still needs help with becoming a more consistent football player but his play recognition skills have improved and he has a very strong upper and lower body. Is a player who would benefit going to a team that is competitive and one where he could learn from some veterans for awhile.

1-13-03 Lacks explosiveness as a rusher, but has good size and plays with technique and intensity. Late 1st to early 2nd round.

12-30-02 Short, but isn't undersized. Not the typical collegiate defensive end. Doesn't rely on a speed rush, in fact White is almost slow off the snap. Has very good strength at the point of attack and is relentless. Very tough to run on. Can stand up the offensive tackle and form a pile or simply stretch out the play to the sideline. Unlike most collegiate defensive ends, White is extremely disciplined and does not over-rush the outside. White stays in his lane and simply beats the OT with a combination of strength, tenacity, and block-shed technique. Pursues down the line and down the field. Has instincts that are rarely seen at this position. Diagnoses the play very quickly and puts himself in position to be where the play is going, not where the ball player currently is. If there is a concern it is that White still isn't consistent enough and has had some injury problems over his career - including a torn ACL in high school and a broken hand last season. Burst onto the scene as a freshman two years ago with a 56 tackle, 14 sack season that simply saw him be voted as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. Was even better this past season - dominating contests and ending up with 91 total tackles and 16 sacks despite playing much of the season with a broken hand. Hasn't been nearly as explosive thus far in 2002, but is playing without the feared pass rush of DE Michael Josiah for the first time in his career and is now the clear focus of every blocking scheme.

12-15-02 Not having as good a season as last year, but still had 9.5 sacks. First round caliber and likely to leave early.

11-08-02 One of the hottest names in the entire country right now is defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson of Kentucky (#63 pictured above). The 6'3, 311 pound junior has been quietly enjoying a super comeback season this year, after ankle and knee injuries robbed him off his natural explosion last season. Only a junior, there is no telling if Robertson is looking to leave early, but with this senior defensive tackle class looking a little weak outside of Jimmy Kennedy and William Joseph, he may have to consider it.

1-3-03 Louisville DE Dewayne White has announced that he will be entering the 2003 draft. White is coming off a somewhat disappointing year and was reportedly told by the NFL special draft advisory committee that he is a projected second round pick.

12-02-02 Junior DE White appears headed to pros... Louisville junior DE Dewayne White reportedly will make a decision on whether to enter the 2003 draft sometime in the next two weeks. White will be talking with his advisors, as well as people from the NFL, in the next little while to ascertain his draft status. White has indicated, though, that he will likely be entering the draft unless he is projected to go lower than the second round. Given that most teams around the NFL have White rated as a potential first rounder, it would seem likely that White is on his way to the pros.

10-23-02 Players like DT William Joseph and DE Jerome McDougle, both of defending national champion Miami, along with massive DT Jimmy Kennedy of Penn State and junior DE DeWayne White have all played like the top 10 prospects they are at times, but at other times have looked somewhat unmotivated.

12-30-02 Another defensive end seemingly close to making the jump into the draft is Louisville's Dewayne White. Building upon a story we first reported last month, White is not placing unrealistic expectations as the foundation for his decision to declare his eligibility and sources familiar with the Cardinal program told us they feel the recent resignation of coach John L. Smith, who took over the reigns at Michigan State, may be the icing on the cake for White. After a hard upbringing as a youth which was well documented, it was Smith who brought White to the Cardinal program.
We feel White is making a mistake but then again as we reported, he'll be happy going in round two which is where we have him slated to guy.

12-18-02 The defense is another story; Dewayne White is seriously considering leaving early for the draft even though he's having an off season yet the defensive end will still be a top 60 selection.

12-11-02 If there were a single defender in I-A football that stands out as one constantly in the opponents backfield wreaking havoc, it would be Dewayne White of Louisville. Compared by some to Bruce Smith, he is a prospect teams want on draft day; a lineman that impacts the game as a pass rusher. But how does he project to the next level.
Scouting Report
The Good: Explosive pass rusher that makes an inordinate amount of plays up the field. Plays low with leverage, fluid and easily moves about the field, making plays in every direction. Redirects well, quickly alters his attack angle and will flatten then pursue the action with speed. Keeps his feet moving up the field, effectively keeps blockers away with his hands and gets constant penetration behind the line of scrimmage. The Bad: Not big or bulky, handled at the point by a single blocker and wears down over the course of a game. Lacks the great first step off the snap and does not display a burst of closing speed. Had a relentless style the previous two seasons defending both the run or pass, but seemingly lost his edge this year and looks like he's living off former headlines. May be limited in the number of schemes he will be effective in at the next level due to size limitations. The Skinny: Seriously considering leaving for the draft and will need some terrific workouts if he's to break into the top 45-choices based on his play this year.

11-18-02 used at both tackle and end
quick off the snap, plays with forward lean and displays excellent hand technique
quick to the inside with a nice move and displays laterally speed
rarely off his feet
tough, plays with pain and stays with the action
will defend the run
handled in one-on-one blocking, slow to shed and stood up at the point
Comments: Playing hurt, which is dragging his performance down. Solid prospect but his size and lack of growth potential concerns us.

7-19-02 The talk and focus is on lineman Dewayne White; a relentless defensive end that displays great pass rush ability, making a lot of plays in the opponents backfield but at the same time doing an adequate job stopping the run or stringing the action out laterally. White goes 100mph all game long and is a real asset for the Cards but to our minds he just does not project entirely well to the next level. Barely 6-2/280 he's short for end, not big enough for tackle nor fast enough to play off the line as a three-four linebacker. His best position may be as an under-tackle in a four-three alignment or even playing the "three technique" in a similar scheme. Bottom line is White, only a junior, may be a collegian with eye-popping numbers that slides on draft day whenever he declares himself eligible.

Sounds like a very good pick in the first and with Faine would be my first rounders.

He could be an option, if we don't trade up in the draft, which I think we will do.

I dont think we will.
1) We cant make a major jump(i.e. into the top 15) so unless there is a player out there that Al really wants, that cant be had at then end of the 1st maybe then... but i dont think thats the case...Not to mention that this team isnt just looking to next year, we want to add bodies for the future and we could possibly have 2 solid additions at the end of round 1.
2) From what i hear and read, there is only about 20 players, at the most, in this years draft that are true '1st rounders'... anybody could fall anywhere after the top 15 and that could mean alot of surprises and movement in 1st round!(but not us)
(example.. Jets want to move up, they have 2 first rounder and they would love to move up from 13 to get in the top 7 to pick up either a Big WR or DT)
3) Al and Bruce may want to take advantage of that extra 1st rounder, it can fill out a team nicely!

Needs... Safety, DE and/or DT and OL.... we might gamble on a QB(heavy QB draft) and the option of adding a LB who could be a project is always a option late in the draft(especially for STeams)

Can Bruce Allen play Defensive End?????? Hell he does wonders for the cap, beats out his Boss for executive of the year, helps out with the court battles, tells everybody (along with Al) in the league to kiss his white ass......he's a jack of all trades!! Go ahead Bruce and start negotiating with yourself on a life-long contract and a blank check with Al's signature for your signing bonus.

I think that if we trade up it won't happen until the draft has already started. If a player we like drops to a reasonable point for a trade, I think you'll see the Raiders trade up to get him, must like PBuch last year. If no one special falls far enough, I think we'll stand pat and get the best two players we can.

I agree with Crizp that's the most likely scenario. What I would also love to see (assuming we stand pat) is somehow working a deal with Cincy for their second rounder which would in effect give us almost three first rounders since I believe they pick first in the second round. Maybe package our second rounder from next year with another pick and throw in a player like Stinch.
This would enable us to pick at least two quality defensive players and maybe take a flyer on Mcgahee.

I don't like White, and he's not what we need. We have guys that are capable against the run. We need a DE that can bring the pressure in obvious passing situations; a guy with a quick first step and closing speed.

He is a Bryant type, no quit, motors through to play ends, runs wide better for pursuit, simple strongside runstop de, kind of guy we always needed on one side of the ball in a 3-4 or 4-3 to free our speed guys up... not the kind to get a ton of stats, but support player who maintains his lane... very similar to what Trace does for us now as well. Since Bres cant seem to make players disciplined maybe getting one whp already is makes sense... solid midround addition.
