Draft Profile - Chris Sims
Chris Simms
QB, Texas
Arm strength: Has a lanky frame. Shows good zip on his deep outs. Has a strong downfield arm. Lacks an elite arm, but his strength is similar to that of the Rams' Kurt Warner. Grade: 8.0
Accuracy/delivery: Shows nice touch on short routes. Has good timing on his passes. Shows good mechanics, a smooth delivery and can get into a rhythm. Best suited for a spread offense. Grade: 7.6
Field vision: Makes some mind-boggling decisions at times, especially for a quarterback’s son. Has struggled to beat the blitz and forces passes under pressure. Throws too many balls up for grabs. Doesn't consistently look off safeties and too often locks onto his primary receiver. Grade: 6.8
Running ability: Lacks speed and isn't a threat to take off and run. Lacks a great feel for the pocket and doesn't buy many second chances with his feet. Makes too many mental mistakes when hurried. Is a different quarterback when he is under pressure than when he has time to throw. Grade: 6.5
Intangibles: There is much to like to about him. Has handled much adversity the past two seasons. Biggest concern remains his history of poor play in big-game situations. Grade: 7.0
Bottom line: Simms has the size, arm strength, accuracy and bloodline to be an NFL starter, but something is missing. The pressure to succeed has always been on him. He put up strong numbers in college, but he always played his worst in big games. Physically, Simms is a first-round prospect, but he has yet to develop the mental toughness and leadership skills to match his natural abilities. It may be worth it for a team to take a chance on him late in the second round, but not much earlier.

The next Griese, got where he is on name recognition, is junk vs. ranked teams.

We don't need another young QB. I've seen a couple of mock drafts and 'net rumors that have us taking a QB in round 1 or making a big trade to move up to take Leftwich or Palmer. If our offense is so complex and we already have a young, talented QB who is going into his 3rd yr. in the system and has done nothing to show that he isn't the future, why would the Raiders braintrust spend the huge signing bonus money on another young QB?? That is the one thing that makes no sense at all about any draft day scenario involving us drafting a QB. It does make for good conversation and it's always good to keep your opponents guessing.

I would be more than surprised if the Raiders grabbed a QB in the first round. I just don't see it happening.

Sims struggled in the big games in college. If he thinks that was pressure, wait till he sees the difference in the pro game. He's a likeable kid who took a lot of heat for his inconsistent play but took the criticism like a man.
I'd like to see him make it in the NFL but he's far from being a first rounder IMO.

I like Simms, this kid has tools to become a solid NFL qb.
I didnt like the way he played against top-ranked teams, but as a 2nd rounder this kid would be solid!
Question, U think he'll be better than Drew "**** face" Brees?!

I have a weird feeling about Simms, I believe he is just another Peyton Manning waiting to happen....both have dads that played in the NFL, can't win the big game in college, they have the physical tools to be great, but just come up short in the big games....now granted it's hard to judge somebody by big games.....but when it consistantly happens, like it does to both of them... makes you wonder if they're cursed, like the bills in the superbowl.

Simms is 5th round material at best , Griese's dad played and he was third rounder and his fluke self finally got exposed.

I'll bet you any amount that this kid wont even smell the 3rd round!
****... he might go high 2nd!
QB's w/ talent get picked up quickly, nobody wants to be the one who passed up on a great QB!

Hey RaiderInNY, don't get me wrong....I like Peyton myself....and if Simms were to turn out like Peyton then I would take a chance with him, but it's like these two are cursed in the big games you know.....that would make me hesitate...as you know Peyton never won a big game in college and so far it has carried to the NFL even though he is a great talent....get my drift?

I understand... But finding a franchise QB in the NFL is the hardest thing to do.
Thats why organizations will overpay($$$ or draft picks) to get these players.
Productive Qbs are hard to find.
Peyton has never won big games... DRuss dissed him before they played a couple of years ago mentioning this fact, we all know this. But this guy is smart, productibe, has incredible tools, if he had a defense(man, thats y throws alot of pics, forces so many pases, doesnt trust D or rest of offense), the edge healthy and a solid # 2wr and line, he would cut down on INT and be a smarter player.
