Draft Profile - Todd Johnson

Todd Johnson
S, Florida
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 200 lbs
40-yard: 4.55

Strengths: Is a well-built, powerful strong safety. Has good leadership skills and football smarts. Makes the calls in the secondary. Is aggressive against the run. Shows good instincts, and takes solid angles to the ball. Attacks the run, and chases down plays sideline-to-sideline. Has adequate speed. Has good burst when coming forward, and shows good run/pass recognition skills. Is at his best in short zones. Is physical in coverage, and makes his presence felt in the middle of the field. Does not take many bad steps.

Weaknesses: Is much better against the run than in coverage. Lacks great size, and might struggle to hold up near the line. Must show better technique as a tackler; misses too many arm tackles. Lacks great range in coverage, and shows poor man-to-man skills.

Bottom line: Johnson is a solid, durable, dependable player. He is intelligent and basically is a coach on the field. He is aggressive against the run and has good short-area coverage skills. He doesn't make many mistakes and is aggressive. Johnson has adequate size and speed but lacks great physical tools. He lacks the speed and change-of-direction skills to hold up man-to-man against most NFL receivers. That is why Johnson will be a late-Day 1 pick.

I've had a chance to see him play a lot living here in Fla. Not spectacular but a real solid player. Reminds me of Vann Mcelroy a little bit. He can play both safety positions. He's a solid mid round pick who'll most likely play in a lot of nickel packages. I'd have no problem drafting him in the 4th or 5th round.

Might be a good pick. Seems like he's best suited to play SS, which is where Gibson is now. But Gibson can play FS. He has pretty good coverage skills

P.S. Does Al know we're working for free???

We could pick him up later and I really like his pluses. He sounds a lot like Rod Woodson minus the age and experience. He's not the fastest around (but not slow either), but with his intelligence and aggressiveness he will make plays. If he had a year to study under someone like Rod I think he could eventually be a FS.
