The situation is getting so dire, Callahan said, that's he considering using some high-profile players in key special teams slots. Already, Tim Brown has been asked to fair catch on punt returns and safety Rod Woodson has said he wouldn't be surprised to be called into action. But wholesale personnel changes often are difficult on special teams late in the season.
"Sometimes it is, because you have a lot of starters that you really don't want to be able to put on those teams," Callahan said. "You know, you want to have a lot of your starters fresh. But I am looking at the possibility of starters going back on special teams.
Could Charles Woodson, who's working his way back from a fractured shoulder, be a candidate to return punts once again?
"I feel good. This is the best I've felt in a couple of weeks," said Woodson, not ruling it out. "I lifted (weights) today and my shoulder felt good, I lifted with no pain. (Sunday) I played pretty well — my wind was getting back up. Maybe in the next couple of weeks I might get a chance to get back there and do something."
