Candidates have shown interest, but they have not taken the job. Payton - it turns out - would have been a great choice. Al recognized his potential, because he still has the eye for talent. But he couldn't get him on board. Did Payton (or Wisenhunt, Petrino, etc) turn down the job or was he never offered the job? It may not matter.

I can just imagine the interview.

Al Davis: So, what do you think about the vertical offense?
Candidate: I think it's a relic from the 1960s.
AD: Uh...right then. We'll get back to you.
