See the problem as I see it, is that our organization is at times run much like the fans would run it. They go for big name guys and expect instant results. I remember at the beginning of the year, people were hailing Walter is the next Stabler, now all I read is that he is a bum and we need to draft a QB. Does anyone in their right mind think that drafting a QB is gonna fix our problems? We need an entire offensive unit!
This is why I am opposed to drafting a QB:
For starters, I have not given up on Walter. I am not going to say he will be the next great something... but what we need to do if we are to have ANY success in todays NFL is develop the players we draft. TUI was drafted in the 2nd round and has had 1 start.... now he no longer fits the system and was a wasted draft pick. Walter started 8 games for the worst offensive line in the game, worst offensive scheme, subpar ground game and receivers that dropped crucial passes.... and now he is a being called a "bust", even though his numbers were similar and in some cases better than the veteran starter Brooks. It doesn't matter who you throw in there... Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Cutler... (or anyone else who folks say we should have drafted) the results may have been a tick better, but not by much, not in this offense.
So what does everyone want to do, draft some high prospect at Qb and throw him to the wolves? Then what, after 6-7 games, when the Raiders have the same results as this year you all will turn and start calling him a "bust". Then the hype will begin, "let's draft (insert next big name)".
I say no no no! Although Qb is no doubt the most important position on the offensive side of the ball, this is a team sport and whom ever is under center needs talent around him. I say let's take this number one to the bank and trade down! Get all we can for it and make smart picks! Let's not just take a guy cause he is a big name, or take a guy cause he benches the most or runs the fastest! Consider those things of course, but let's look for a guy that also has play making ability... that proved so on the field. No more Stanford Routts (I like Routt, but there are starters in this league that went after him that could have helped us more)! It's okay to be risky and take raw talent on occasion, but we practice it way too much.
So I say trade down, get all we can out of that number one over all! And we take the best offensive player that falls to us at whatever position.... lord knows we need them all.
Walter haters I reason with you like this: If we can assemble a decent team to put around Walter and he still can't succeed, than what have we lost? We lost one starter and got potentially three starters for him. Isn't one player (Walter) easier to replace?
